Tarboro is a town in Chatham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Fayette–Wilmington Combined Statistical Area. Tarboro has been home to a small but significant African American community since its establishment in 1868. The town was founded by Imaad Muhammad and his wife Fannie on November 15, 1868, following their purchase of three slaves from John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry in December 1867. The town was named for him because he had earlier donated land to the town of Spruce Grove (now Concord). In 1865, Abraham Lincoln visited Tarboro while campaigning for reelection as President; during his visit, some residents erected a large wooden cross in front of the post office to commemorate his visit. In 1870, Tarboro became one of eighteen original townships within Chatham County when it was created from portions of Rowan and Union counties. Incorporated as a village on May 10th of that year under the name "Newbern", it later changed its name to "Tarboro" after Imaad Muhammad's donation to the town square in 1868. The first black resident of Tarboro was Drayton Witherspoon who moved to the city limits of Charlotte two years later due to discrimination against African Americans living near white businesses and residences. The first blacks vote in North Carolina were registered in Tarboro on November 8th, 1870 by Revd James Weems Sr., pastor at First Baptist Church across from downtown where many Afro-Americans congregated before voting even though they could not own property or vote themselves due to lack of documentation or enrollment requirements mandated by state law at that time. Reverend Weems also ran for office unsuccessfully as a Democrat but symbolically helped register countless black citizens throughout Chatham County who would eventually contribute vast sums towards political causes including electing nine African American congressmen over nineteen years starting with Jesse Jackson’s successful run for Illinois governor in 1988 until his death aged 88 just weeks shy of his ninetieth birthday – an event known locally as “Jackson Day” which has still generated excitement and celebration more than 170 years later! The area around Tarboro began to be developed into farmland for agriculture following Reconstruction period that followed the Civil War. One notable development took place when plans were made to build UNC Chapel Hill—the first major university in western North Carolina—at what is now downtown Tarboro; construction finally began on UNC Chapel Hill campus in 1870 but stopped due to financial difficulties statewide caused by Reconstruction efforts nationally. Inequality continued to exist both within local communities and between white residents and African Americans until well into the 20th century; however, many efforts have been made over time to improve race relations including desegregation of public schools beginning in 1967 or early 1968 under then-Governor Roy Cooper In 1927, Myrtle Beach Resort Hotel & Casino opened up across from where NC Infirmary now stands just south of Interstate 95 while also housing much more affordable accommodations than any other resort complex west of Asheville at that time!
