The town has a rich history dating back to 1819 when Captain David Worth founded what would become known as Worth County. In 1892, General Jubal A. Grant founded Lookout Mountain National Battlefield Park in nearby Lewisburg which remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in central North Carolina today. The community that now stands in Thomasville was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived during the late 1800s looking for new land to settle after leaving their homes in Ulster Province, Ireland. Many of these settlers were mechanics or laborers who had come over on horseback or wagon trains called the Scotch broom migration because they thought it would be easier than walking acrossland from Ulster province. After reaching what are now western Jackson and eastern Pickens Counties, they erected wooden fences around their parcels of land and began farming their crops and raising livestock until railroads came along and made farming much more accessible. By 1830, some eighty percent of all farmers in Pickens County were Irish American with about two-thirds coming from Dublin Township on the north side of town – one mile east of where present day First Ward intersects Main Street (now Donelson Road). This large Irish influx led to heavily Catholic areas being established throughout downtown Thomasville including Market Square (now Third Street), near Trinity Episcopal Church; Patrick’s Alley between Second and Third Streets; and near High School (now Fourth Street) between Eighth Avenue South and Ninth Avenue South (the old alignment now forms Cherry Hill Road). In 1839, an act was passed by both houses of Congress providing for a public school district within Pickens County as part of efforts to promote education among commoners throughout America while also countering local aristocrats’ control over education within their own districts. The original trustees were John Goudreau (term expired), James Fenton (term expired), Martin Brougham (term expired), Daniel McLaughlin Sr., Revd Dr William Weirbach (!revd.), Captains David Worth, Enoch Pratt; Robert Ewing (term expired); George Washington Carver et al.; school opened on October 25th 1840 with 1 teacher/27 students inside Old Post Office building located at Seventh Avenue South between Locust Street & Elmira Streets.) For many years this venerable building served as both a meeting place for village board members as well as classrooms for teachers before being moved out into plain sight opposite courthouse square next door around 1907-08 following increasing enrollment at Douglass College due primarily to railroad activity passing through townENOCH PRATT: “I remember our first day there [October 25], 1840 when we walked into town under Mr McClaughlin’s guidance after spending several days exploring surrounding country…We found that everything looked new under his guidance! He had been living hereabouts since before our settlement began so he must have been very familiar with it all – even its physical features! I can still see him leading us up ElmiraStreet past St Joseph’s Chapel towards Market Square(!) where we sat down around a fire built from logs brought over from my father’s plantation downrange on Locke Creek just west side Frome River bluff overlooking Tomtown Valley below !!! We enjoyed watching smoke rising from various properties downrange including those owned by Captains Worth & Enoch Pratt whose plantations covered most or virtually all acres within our boundaries…..Afternoon classes continued indoors until dark then outdoor tuition commenced under direction OF Gen JUBAAL A GRANT UPPER COUNTIES MILITARY WARDENS commander) later Lt Col John Suggins USMC)….By 1851 attendance had grown sufficiently enough THAT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT WAS REFUGEEED TO NEW ORLEANS IN EARLY JULY 1861 UNDER THE AUTHORITY OF PRESIDENT JOHN C McGUIRE WITH RESPECT TO THE KENTUCKY CRISIS !" The first human settlement in what is now Thomasville was founded by Captain John Smith on July 16, 1772. In 1809, General Andrew Jackson's army passed through the area and burned all the homes of white settlers in retaliation for Indian raids that year. The town was incorporated as a village on December 22, 1907. In 1923, it became an incorporated town after passage of a bill by then-Governor Sixty-Third General Assembly establishing municipal government within Cherokee County with power to levy taxes and maintain public schools and other public services. On November 15, 2002, Thomasville voters approved an ordinance allowing retail liquor sales beginning January 1st of 2003. The first store opened its doors on January 1st of 2003 under the name "Alcoholics Anonymous" with assistance from Alcoholics Anonymous North Carolina Chapter #1
