Thomasville is a small town in Surry County, North Carolina. It was founded in 1785 by George Washington and named for him. The first settler in the area was James White. He built a cabin on the side of a hill near what is now downtown Thomasville. In 1827, Gouverneur Morris, then United States Secretary of State, came to Thomasville and met with its founders. He purchased land here and began to build a plantation called Morris Plantation. The townspeople were so grateful to Morris that they decided to name their new settlement after him. The town's first post office was established in 1828, and it became known as "Tommy" because of its previous owner's nickname. In 1847, the Confederate Army invaded Tennessee and invaded North Carolina. The Union army marched into Thomasville and burned all of the town's buildings except for Morris' plantation headquarters which still stands today. After the war ended, most residents returned home but some stayed behind to rebuild what had been lost during the conflict. In 1925, Mayor Wirt Hinton proposed building a new civic center in downtown Thomasville which would be used as an education center for local students as well as serve as a cultural hub for surrounding communities. The idea was accepted by the community and construction began immediately afterwards. The new civic center served as the central business district until it was razed in 1978 due to fire codes changes that made large buildings unwisely combustible during an urban evacuation drill gone awry (the city later rebuilt). The old civic center still stands vacant today but is occasionally used for events such as summer concerts or First Friday night store openings since it has several historic features intact including two original windows from when Tommy operated out of this space (now used by Historic Triangle Tours).

On October 20, 1943 aerial bombing began against Japanese targets within the limits of Campsite Plan No., resulting in widespread destruction and loss of life across much of NC Coastlines; this raid marks one of only two times that air raids have successfully destroyed entire towns or villages without any fatalities or injuries reported among residents/workers involved; later that year on November 16th Ulysses S Grant visited CampsitePlanNo.; he declared it "a model community" Today Thomasville continues to provide quality education opportunities through its many schools which are located throughout Pender County including: Randolph-Macon Community Schools (RMS), Thomasville Technical School (TTS), East Campus Academy (ECA) & West Campus Academy (WCA) On January 1st 2020 there will be a new high school called UNC Asheville Preparatory School which has been built adjacent to Mount Olivet Lutheran church off US Highway 412 just east of I-485 exit 54B The economy primarily relies upon agriculture with tobacco being main crop while local businesses provide other services such as transportation and repair shops needed for farming equipment etc.. There are also a few small businesses providing retail services such as health food stores etc...the biggest industries currently employing people locally are service jobs such as waitressing/food service/petsitting etc...
