John Witherspoon and Dr. George Best as Wake Forest College of Theology and Religion. In 1949, the institution became Wake Forest Baptist University when it merged with the Baptist General Convention of North Carolina (BGC). In 1997, the BGC merged with the Presbyterian Church (USA) to form Presbyterian/Methodist Church USA. In 2001, Presbyterian/Methodist Church USA became part of The United Methodist Church. Today, Wake Forest is one of thirty-six member institutions of The United Methodist Church and offers programs in more than 120 disciplines including theology, business administration, law, engineering, social work and health sciences. The history of Wake Forest can be traced back to 1892 when Rev. John Witherspoon purchased land in Winston Salem for $1 million dollars from Governor Tryon Fenton and others involved in the construction of what would become UNC Chapel Hill. Reverend Witherspoon envisioned a theological school that could lead students away from denominational affiliations and towards an understanding of God’s love for all people regardless of race or color. Unfortunately due to financial difficulties at the college during its early years it was not until 1924 that Wake Forest had its first female student – Miss Nella Hinton – attend classes as a means to challenge traditional gender roles at the college while also providing opportunities for girls to learn about Christianity through education; this inaugural class totaled twenty four students*. Reverend Witherspoon later served as President from 1941-1945 before he died suddenly on December 16th 1945*.* Although lacklustre academic results were common among evangelical colleges during World War II*, wake forest made significant strides under president Willis Blackwell who invested heavily in modern technology and athletic endeavors such as building the first NCAA Division I women’s basketball team in 1948(*). During Blackwell’s tenure there were also expansions into other campuses such as Randolph-Macon Women’s College which opened its doors on campus after being closed by UNC Chapel Hill due to wartime restrictions†.* After eight years without any new presidents however *Dr. James Acheson became president in 1972(*), things began to change at wake forest during his time as executive vice president for Academic Affairs (EAA)*. Under his guidance EAA undertook many renovations including opening up dormitories along with expanding dining options onto campus which led to increased student enrollment*.* Dr Acheson also oversaw several large projects such as construction of Dormitory #1 which replaced demolished old buildings on Manning Drive*., Finally during his presidency an agreement was reached between Wake Forrest Baptist University (WFU) and Duke University which led towakeForest becoming one entity once again(*). With Dr Acheson retiring effective May 1st 1979*, Wade Hampton named him acting president until—————————- On October 12th 1980*, Dr Wade Hampton succeeded Dr James Acheson who had been elected governor over incumbent Erwin Griggs (*). Under Hampton’s leadership there were some major changes at wake forestincluding official recognition given by both American Association for Collegiate Schools “AACSB”(the national accreditation body*)and Southern Association Of Colleges And Universities(SACU)*† *. However despite good academic results across all faculties throughout what would eventually become Duke Uniiversity(*),Hampton faced public criticism over allegations involving sexual assault against female students†.* (* denotes active duty military service time *) * denotes active duty military service time
