Wake Forest was founded in 1814 as a Presbyterian college. In 1865, it became the first all-black university in the United States. In 1976, Wake Forest became a flagship institution of the University of North Carolina System. The UNC system is one of the largest collegiate athletic conferences in America and has produced many famous athletes, including current UNC players like LeBron James and Cam Newton. The school was named for General William Traitor Wakefield who fought against British forces at Yorktown in 1781. The college moved to its current location on Randolph Street in downtown Winston-Salem in 1892 after buying land from Jesse Fellows, Sr., a slaveowner who had donated $5,000 to the school. In 1934, Wake Forest opened its first dormitory and began offering undergraduate education at night. The following year, Wake Forest hired its first female faculty member, Drs. Virginia Woolf and Margaret Mead. Today, over 50% of Wake Forest’s students are women. Wake Forest's history goes back to 1814 when Presbyterian missionaries founded the college as part of an effort to open up black learning opportunities within Christianity across North Carolina's growing frontier settlement (see Durham vs Chapel Hill). In 1865 ACC student leader Booker T Washington led a boycott of classes at chapel hill due to unequal access to educational opportunities for African Americans throughout the state - an event that helped lead toNCAA integration seven years later (see Raleigh vs Chapel Hill). This action helped awaken white North Carolinians about their duty to provide equal educational opportunity for all citizens regardless of race or color - something that continues today with NC State's "One Raleigh" policy promoting diversity whilesafeguarding academic excellence among both public institutions and private schools statewide). The opening of WFTSC followed similar footsteps; two years earlier Douglass College had also become one of only two black colleges west of Baltimore into which ACC expanding members Clemson & UNC allowed admission (the other being Richmond Polytechnic Institute) – resulting not only in increased enrollment but also enhanced access by blacks to quality higher education opportunities throughout eastern NC during this period (# see Durham vs Chapel Hill ).In response WFTSC embarked on ambitious construction projects such as new facilities on what is now Randolph Street including: A three story library building completed in 1892; an amphitheater/hall built for sporting events which could seat 1,500 people; extensive renovations/updates doneto existing buildings including new running tracks/courtspace created on topofold millrace; and offices overlooking RandolphStreet leading directlyto visitor center on main campus – becoming perhapsoneof ONLY American universities then open primarilyTo studentsFROM ALL OVER NORTH CAROLINA!
