In 1824, a post office was established at Waynesville with the name "Winchester". In 1828, Winchester became an independent town and had its own post office. In 1830, Waccamaw Township was formed from parts of Winchester and Waynesville. On December 16, 1836, Waccamaw Township completely detached from Henderson County to form Mecklenburg County. In May 1861, Confederate General Braxton Bragg's army invaded North Carolina and encountered Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant near Dahlgren’s Mill on the Yadkin River. After a skirmish that resulted in two Union killed and four wounded, Bragg ordered his army to retreat into Tennessee without suffering any losses. Lieutenant Colonel James Hays supervised these troops as they withdrew down the Yadkin River towards Greensboro across from Fort Sumter (now known as Myrtle Beach). On July 4th 1863 during the Battle of Gettysburg - which ended Confederate victory - Hays' Battalion of Infantry successfully defended a bridge over Cemetery Hills against advancing Union cavalry while also repelling repeated assaults by bayonet charges from nearby Confederate artillery batteries
