Weddington began as an agricultural community on the banks of the Yadkin River. A post office was established there in 1853, and by 1865 it had become a small town with a population of 350. In 1907, Weddington became one of two towns in Wilson County to be merged into the larger city of Raleigh; this merger created a new economic center for Wilson County. The local paper mill closed in 1966 and its products were distributed through mail order instead. However, over time Weddinton has redeveloped its economy and now specializes in arts and crafts processing along with marketing services to businesses within the Raleigh-Durham area. The downtown district is home to several restaurants and businesses making it an attractive place to live or visit during business hours. A state park named after General Robert E Lee occupies much of Weddington's eastern edge overlooking the Yadkin River which forms its border with Greensboro County on one side and Johnston County on the other side It opened in 1933 adjacent to what is now known as Joe Gibbs Arena (now part of Wake Forest University). There are also several smaller parks scattered throughout town including: Dodds Park (a single-acre nature preserve), Elm Street Park (including both Olde Hickory Golf Course located just east of town off US 12 between Red Bank Road and Sunbury Pike) and Springdale Park southwest of town on NC 527 just east of I-40 exit #307
