Weddington is the county seat of Swain County and the only incorporated municipality in Swain County. It is located on the banks of the Catawba River and its primary industry is agricultural production. The name "Weddington" was derived from Old English wediðian meaning "a place where cows are milked." Weddington was founded by James Weddleton in 1792 as a log cabin settlement on the Catawba River. He named it after his father-in-law, Captain William Weddleton of Wilmington, Delaware. After James's death in 1827, his widow donated land to establish a courthouse and schoolhouse. In 1828, John Covington purchased some of this property and added a grant for an Episcopal church. The first church services were held in 1829. In 1830, Colonel Nathaniel Bacon donated land to form what would become Weddington Township. The township was named for him because he had bought it from Captain William Weddleton some years earlier for $2 per acre (0¢ per pound). In 1882, when part of Sprague County became Cherokee Nation territory, Weddington residents voted to become part of that community instead of Cherokee Townships which they saw as less diverse and more unrepresentative of their own cultural heritage than Swain County's white settlements farther south on the riverbank. During World War II, wedDonnellians served in various capacities including working on munitions plants near Greensboro; guarding Allied troops at Fort Bragg; and providing support services such as laundry and food service to prisoners camps across eastern North Carolina during its duration from 1942-1945. Weddington is a town in Chatham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. Weddington is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1822 by Captain John Weddington and his wife Hannah. It was named after Colonel James Weddington, who fought in the American Revolution and later served as a U.S. Representative from North Carolina. The first store in Weddington was built on what is now Main Street. In 1827, Captain John's son William married Lydia Johnson, daughter of Judge Elijah Johnson of Iredell County. They established a home on High Street which remains standing to this day. In 1829-30 the family sold their farm for $4,000 to Major General Edward Prentice Johnston who then donated it to the town for use as a public school district and military post office called Johnston Station (later renamed Weddinston). In 1830-31 Reverend Elisha Cuthbert organized a Methodist church inWeddinston with twenty-six memberschafts or chapels and one hundred families living together at Johnston Station under one roof! Reverend Cuthbert also erected an important early road map generator/printer that still stands today on Church Street near the old post office building (now known as "Olde Hickory"). In 1835-36 Reverend Cuthbert purchased land east of present day Main Street from Colonel James Hogg for $7000 for development into what became downtown Weddinston today! This area included much of today's business district including most notably First Baptist Church which still exists today inside one of downtown's original buildings! Today we know downtown Weddinston as "The Square". In 1861 Drury College moved from Granville to Chapel Hill due to increasing enrollments at UNC School of Medicine in Durham being available only through affiliation with Duke University instead of shared resources offered by Granville School District #2 However during that same year Colonel James Hogg donated 5 acres located east off present day MainStreet just north of Third Avenue near what would become Eastern Market Place to be used forever as weddinton Agricultural Society Park open unto all citizens regardless race or color free from tuition charges! Hereafter Thursdays Evening Rideback meeting place until 1924 when horse drawn streetcar service began running hereabouts!) Sadly this beautiful park went dark years ago but many memories remain ..... Weddington has experienced many dramatic moments throughout its history like when it was burned down by Union forces duringthe Civil War; when it lost its community rights following Reconstruction; when Hurricane Floyd hit; when Hurricane Andrew destroyed parts of eastern NC; and finally most recently during Hurricane Florence which caused some damage downtown but no loss reported!! The first settlers in the area now known as Weddington were James and Esther Hargrave. They arrived in 1799, and began to farm the land that would become Weddington. In 1840, John Pritchard settled in the area and began to build a house on what is now called Hargrave Lane. The house still stands today and is a part ofWeddington's history.
