However, due to economic reasons (railroad construction cutting off trade) as well as lack of education and transportation opportunities for its residents, the town slipped into obscurity after this initial period of growth. However, over time new businesses started cropping up and development picked up again thanks to both private investment as well as state support for infrastructure projects like Interstate 95/US 43 which connected Raleigh with Durham via now-defunct railroads. As more people moved into WinstonSalem from surrounding counties (including Wake County), property values began skyrocketing and by 1990 the town had regained some level of visibility following a decades-long resurgence in economy that has seen it grow from its current population of around 9600 people to 11700 today!
