Winston Salem is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the Pee Dee River. The population was 56,815 at the 2010 census. Winston Salem is part of the Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area and is the most populous city in Wake County, which has a population of 1 million people. The town's history dates back to 1719 when General James Wilson founded what would become Winston-Salem as an agricultural community near what is now Gaston Avenue and High Street. In 1838, John Randolph became its first mayor, and in 1861 it became one ofthe five cities in North Carolina to secede from Confederate States of America following the battle at Fort Sumter. Winston Salem was reincorporated as a city on February 14, 1911 by an act of the State legislature after years of debate over whether or not to make it an independent municipality due to its proximity to Durham and Raleigh. It had been proposed that Winston Salem be part of Durham but voted against because Durham had more businesses and residents than Winston Salem did. On December 1st, 1922, during World War II, fortified Japanese positions were discovered along the Pee Dee River adjacent to present-day downtown Winston Salem making it necessary for all citizens—male or female—to leave their homes until further notice; this event led to increased security precautions throughout the city center with razor wire instead of chainscissors being used as entry points into many buildings! The Japanese presence also inspired much development within today's limits including a new arts district known as "The District." After World War II ended, many residents decided they wanted their own downtown business district that would include restaurants and nightlife while still keepingaccessible by residential areas on both sides of Gaston Avenue (now called Broadway). This Downtown District project was eventually completed in 1958 with much fanfare but faced opposition from existing businesses who saw their livelihoods destroyed by redevelopment; however Mayor Jepson fought tooth and nail against any change considering it his guarantee that no properties would be lost in order for businesses to remain open. In 1978 then-Mayor William Hodges announced plans for a massive renovation/expansion dubbed "The Project" which included demolishing entire blocks between Broadwalk Boulevard and West End Avenue in order to create new retail space flanked by high schools (now Duke University Chapel). After monthslong deliberations ballot results showed that only about 50%of voters approved expansion despite assurances from Hodges that revenues generated through new development would go towards maintaining public services rather than duplicating them elsewhere; this decision ultimately led Hodges out of office less than two years later after being impeached following accusations he misused taxpayer money while he was mayor Later efforts at comprehensive renewal failed due largely to budget constraints; this left downtown nearly abandoned again until 2006 when developer David Woever resurrected interest in revitalizing both parts of town with investment totaling $40 million dollars resulting in creation OfA brand new downtown district – Today's resurgent Downtown District includes several high-rise buildings dating back TO The Project including One Spring Street –historic Gaston Avenue –and numerous small shops dottingBoulevard southward towards Interstate 95
