Winston Salem is the county seat of Wake County and is one of the most populous cities in North Carolina. It is also home to UNC Charlotte, one of the largest university campuses in the United States. The first Europeans to visit Winston Salem were Captain Avery and his crew from HMS "Endeavour" on October 15, 1735, who landed on Roanoke Island near what is now downtown Winston Salem. They charted a course for what they thought was an unknown land mass but it was actually Cape Fear River which they named "Natal". In 1738, some other sailors from HMS "Dunsborough" discovered what looked like a rich gold field on Tryon's Creek and began prospecting there as well. By 1740, this area had become known as Tryon's Mines because many men had worked there over time including Sir Walter Raleigh who became the first British Governor of North Carolina in 1739–47. The discovery led to increased traffic through Tryon's Creek so much so that someone built a mill right next to it within two years just south of today’s Square One shopping center (now part of University Town development). In 1819, John Randolph became governor after being elected by local electors and he ordered General James Johnston to move NC forces out of South Carolina and into eastern Tennessee where he could march against Gen Andrew Johnson’s army under Lt.-Gen William Tarnell which had invaded Georgia three weeks earlier and captured Savannah! Randolph called Johnston “the general we have not wanted” because he refused orders to march into battle with 100 thousand soldiers instead marching towards Chattanooga when Johnston realized his position would be hopelessly exposed if he crossed Chattahoochee River at Bridgeport Gap; thus saving his army! In 1820, Randolph appointed James Meeks as sheriff which created more law enforcement in Winston-Salem than any other town in North Carolina! A group led by Amos Kendall formed the Provisional Government composed primarily of farmers with little government experience while Ordway served as interim mayor until January 1830 when James Knoepfer took office after serving as justice during Randolph’s term as governor! Knoepfer tripled police force size while working towards developing financial stability for townspeople; something that has been continued ever since! In 1831-32 Confederate troops burned down all but one store building (the Pickens store) during their attempt to take over town!! On December 10th 1861 Union troops burned all remaining stores except for 1 grocerystore - this event helped startWWII !! After Reconstruction following civil war Reconstruction period saw significant growth with addition both public works projects such as canals etc.; however most major street name changes throughout city occurred during this time !!! Today remnant African American community still exists within city limits although majority resides outside downtown areas !!!
