Winston Salem is a town in Craven County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 10,521 at the 2010 census. Winston Salem is part of the Charlotte Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit the area now known as Winston Salem was Ambrosius Earle in 1814. In 1842, General Richard Montgomery erected a forts at present-day Broadwalk and Elm streets in what is now Winston Salem in order to protect settlers from Indian attacks. The town was platted on February 14, 1847 by James Pendergast and others under the name of "Newbern." On February 24, 1849, Newbern's incorporation as a town was accepted by the North Carolina General Assembly and it became an official part of the state of North Carolina. In 1865, while serving with Confederate forces during the American Civil War, Union general Ulysses S. Grant visited Winston Salem and its then-incorporated community of Newbern on his way to western North Carolina to help defend that region against Confederate attack. Grant ordered local residents to remove all firearms from their homes before he arrived and ordered them not to return until after he had left for safety reasons; this event is said to have been one of the most significant moments in Winston Salem's history. In 1926–27, Winstonsville Elementary School (later renamed Rock Hill Elementary School) opened adjacent to what is now Old Hall Baptist Church across from Interstate 95/US 421; when it did so there were only five classrooms with about 30 students attending each class because transportation was inadequate for those living within walking distance of both schools or coming by bus from nearby Charlotte or even Raleigh respectively! This situation changed when construction began on Ravenswood Junior High School which added three more classrooms (with between 150-200 students), made transportation available throughout WINSTON SALEM proper(and beyond!), gave new impetus to school expansion efforts (during which time old hall church also underwent major renovations), and raised money through fundraising events such as car wash bake sales and THANKSGIVING rotations around churches throughout winstonSalem proper This success led eventually replaced Old Hall Baptist Church asWINSTON SALEM'S PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT HALL OF FAME IN 2007
