Dickinson, North Dakota is a town in Dickinson County, North Dakota. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is the only incorporated community in Dickinson County. The name of the town is derived from General James A. Garfield who was born and died there in 1881. In 1923, Dickinson College moved to nearby Fargo and the original Dickinson School building became home to the college until it closed in 1984. The first settler in what is now Dickinson County was James Garfield who arrived there on horseback from Michigan on July 3, 1875. He had been appointed surveyor for that region by President Ulysses S. Grant and had traveled overland from Fort Laramie to Deadwood during his assignment. When he reached Dickinson he erected a small log cabin near present-day downtown Dickinson on what is now Garfield Avenue named after himself and his friend and patron General John Fenton USMC (1829-1910). Garfield failed to find any land for sale or purchase within his own county so he decided to move westward into Cass County where he built a small two story cabin called "Garland's Butte" about four miles northeast of present day Fargo on what would become known as Garland Road (later Old Hwy 94). There were several other early pioneers located around this area including Joel Sprague (1851-1924), Charles Wickersham (1853-1927) also from Michigan, Henry Weiser (c 1850-) also settled hereabouts, Jesse Ladd(1860-) also from Red River Valley and Jacob Kettner(1862-) also came overland later that same year with journey lasting three days across Nebraska territory then continuing all the way downriver to Aberdeen Landing on the Missouri River at rapids abovepresent day Sioux Falls City Limits near modern day Rapid City Airport which then served as their homesteading village before they crossed Iowa state line into North Dakota Territory lands becoming citizens of this new country under Abraham Lincoln on December 6th of that year pursuant to an act of Congress entitled "An Act To Promote American colonisation In Northwestern Territories" This initial group of settlers soon numbered some 25 more people plus assorted livestock including five cows, 10 horses, 3 pigs and one hog each numbering 116 head total when word spread through the various outlying settlements about this exciting event taking place so close by that many people packed up their belongings meagerly furnished few having any idea how things might develop hereafter It wasn't long before trade began between these northwestern settlement groups with goods exchanged for such items as meat products bought fresh off Indian reservations along with potash rock mined close at hand from local hillsides just north of present day Fargo In 1876 Major George Armstrong Custer led a cavalry regiment against Sitting Bull's Cheyenne & Arapaho band possibly resulting inthe death or capture thereofmany Indians were killed or captured including Chief Joseph but as time passed other bands chief among them Crazy Horse surrendered peacefully rather than go against Ulysses S Grant's order which ended warfare between white Americans & native nations thus sparing important Native children & men alive today while POWs continued being held captive until 1865 when they finally received their freedom under terms negotiated by Secretary Stanton with representatives from all tribes
