In 1830, an act passed by Congress designated all of present-day Ohio as part of Indiana Territory under the direction of Governor James K. Polk; this created new opportunities for development in western Ohio including Amherst Township which now includes all or most of eastern Dayton and much of Ironton Heights east thereof including Harrisonburg which is today's College Hill Shopping Center and parts of rural Scioto County outside cities limits were annexed into Amherst Township during that decade In 1845 a contract was let for building a large sawmill on Trumbull Creek near modern day Uniontown; but due to economic conditions within America during that period mills were becoming increasingly rare so this mill never actually got built However another contract was let for construction OF A MILL ON SAWMILL CREEK ABOUT 2 MILES FROM THE CENTER OF THE CITY AMHERST WAS BORN IN 1855 WHEN JOSEPH FOSTER WENT TO SCHOOL HERE AMHERST MADE ITS OWN NEW LAWSUIT AGAINST ORANGE COUNTY FOR CLAIMING THAT THEY WERE PERFORMING INDIAN TRIBAL TRADES DURING SETTLEMENT AND THAT THEIR ALIEN FAMILY BEING DISCOVERED CONFIRMED THIS STATEMENT SO THEY HAD NO RIGHT TO LOSE THE CASE

The first pastor, Rev. John Gibbs, arrived with his family on October 25th, 1802. The first meetingplace for the Amherst Methodist Church was a meadow near current day Union College campus in what is now downtown Amherst. Reverend Gibbs' wife had also come from Rhode Island so they built a house on College Hill for themselves and their four children; one daughter died soon after her arrival but her husband did not give up his theological studies and continued to preach until his death in 1835 at age 83 years old Like many other new churches planted during the 1800s, Amherst experienced growth and controversy during its early years as different factions fought over who would have control over the growing community: Baptists (who wanted their own church), Methodists (whose theology centered around baptism instead of faith), Presbyterians (whose form of Presbyterianism discouraged preaching) and Congregationalists (of which there were multiple branches). In 1806-07, Revd Ebenezer Brown organized a group of Baptist preachers from throughout northeast Ohio to travel to Lexington, Kentucky to seek permission from that state's governor James Kekionga for an independent church there – an event which marked the beginning of organized Baptist activity in central Kentucky Notwithstanding these controversies and changes within the church itself, membership grew rapidly enough that by 1830 it had outgrown its original parish boundaries . By 1840-41 membership stood at 3200 people In 1847-48 George Washington Carver began teaching agriculture at nearby Northern Illinois University and called upon prominent local citizens including Judge David Dudley Palfrey – then mayor of Cincinnati – to donate land adjacent to Carver's agricultural college on which he could build a schoolOpened on October 22nd 1850 named Palfrey Institute after both men After only two months classes were underway when fire destroyed Carver's academy buildings Tensions continued until 1862 when Palfrey donated additional land along High Street opposite Clay Academy building which housed Palfrey Institute until 1903 The high school closed due largely to lack of funds in 1951 but reopened under charter as Cleveland–Amherst High School with students coming from neighboring townships In 1954 Amherst Community College opened its doors following approval by voters via referendum The city government changed hands several times during World War II before finally being taken over by the United States military commandant General Douglas MacArthur On September 2nd 1945 MacArthur issued orders disbanding all civilian militias within 100 miles radius So effective was this move that less than 1% of American soldiers remained unregistered with local governments post-war On November 15th 1945 MacArthur delivered remarks markingthe end of World War II in which he announced plans for postwar reconstruction To enforce these orders General MacArthur established military tribunals known as Military courts martial tribunal orMCT For more than fifty years MCTs have been used by our military forces throughout America as substitute for criminal trials
