Amherst, Ohio is a small town located in the eastern part of Ohio. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lawrence County and the largest city in Lawrence County by population. Amherst's history dates back to 1795 when it was called Bottsville. In 1801, it became a town and in 1839, it became a village. The first post office for Amherst was established in 1846. The community had a population of just over 100 people when it incorporated as a city on November 3, 1914. On December 1, 1968, the city merged with neighboring Cleveland to form the Cleveland-Amherst metropolitan area which has a total population of almost 15 million people. The name Amherst comes from an old Indian word meaning "place where trees grow." The first settler in this area was Nicholas Botts who arrived in 1795 and named his land after his friend and patron George Washington Botts (1740-1826). In 1801, Amos Witherspoon set up shop here while he looked for land to purchase near Cincinnati because he wanted to be close to both markets and transportation links. After finding some property hereabouts but not yet registered as a town under state law due to lack of inhabitants, Witherspoon petitioned for incorporation on February 8, 1819 from citizens living within his original boundaries only; he received 2/3 votes against all others present but carried on anyway with only one signature from abstaining voter John Smyth (a meadow farmer). On November 3d of that year (two days after becoming an organized town), Amherst had its inaugural meeting with twenty three residents including two officers: clerk Aiken Hoggman and treasurer Solomon Weiser In 1840 or thereabouts (the date cannot be confirmed) Amos Sibley erected another store building on what is now Muskingum Avenue between Third Street East and Fourth Street West; this building still stands today although much damage has been done to it by windstorms over time It seems likely that either around 1840 or shortly thereafter Amos Sibley started marketing cigars here so we can imagine him offloading fresh tobacco ontoitation wagons coming into town during those early days

However, the city's success declined during the 20th century as economic development shifted to Cleveland. Today, Amherst remains a small-town community with a strong agricultural economy.
The Amherst community was founded in 1800 by John and Sarah White. The early settlers were farmers who purchased land from the Muskingum River Indian tribe. The town was named after Ambrose Amherst, an Englishman who explored the Ohio Valley in 1768. The first school was built in 1802 and served as a farmhouse until 1814 when it became a school Annex. In 1827, the village of Amherst was established on what is now State Route 163 and it contained a total population of only 10 people. In 1830, the village merged with neighboring towns of Athens and Richland to form the newly formed city of Amherst.
