Amherst, Ohio is a small city in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 21,593 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton metropolitan area and is located about northeast of Cincinnati and west of Cleveland. Amherst was founded in 1790 by General James Wilkinson as a log cabin community on the Scioto River east of modern day Amherst Township. The first town meeting was held on December 12, 1790, to choose a site for the new village and it met again on January 10, 1791 to make a choice between two sites: one on the Scioto River near present-day Amherst Township and another closer to downtown Dayton. On February 3rd,1791, vote results were tallied showing that Amherst had won with 27 votes against 2 for Dayton; this marked the first time that two towns had agreed to share an eastern border. A post office called "Amherst" was established in 1800, but it remained inactive until 1811 when it became part of "Dayton". The name may be derived from Amos Hill (1600–1686), who served as Surveyor General for OH from 1789 until his death in 1800; or from Thomas Herrington (1727–1812), an Englishman who settled near what is now Case Road in Perry County and named his creek after himself – Herrington's Run (the stream running through case road). In 1815 John Swayne built what is now Swayze Hall which later became home to Pfeiffer University which merged with US Military Academy at West Point in 1939 before becoming Amherst College in 1969. In 1821 there were seven stores operating along Canfield Street within one block north/south of where Main Street now borders Old Main building across from US Cellular Center today - this included four dwellings (later known as Swayne's Store) also occupied by faculty members including Drs Samuel Mather ( sometime during this period )and Ebenezer Farnsworth . By 1830 there were 14 stores operating within one block north/south including six residences - these included three buildings still extant today belonging to Pfeiffer University: Ziegler Hall (now known as Patton Library), Cook House Annexe and Wright House Annexe . On July 8th 1830 residents voted 6-to-1 not to annex into Greene County due to concerns over land prices being too high while also rejecting annexation requests from neighboring communities such as Cuyahoga Falls and Lima . In November 1830 residents passed a resolution proposing incorporation into Lucas County but this proposal too failed citing lack of support among residents. Population growth continued outside of urban areas throughout much of 19th century America because people coming out West wanted land so they could establish villages like they did back East with their families then travelers would move back East to settle down once their families acquired some property parcels Westerners desired especially since railroads came around during this time allowing goods Cars and people all over America fast access making life easier for everyone involved including farmers trying produce & meat products side by side with Northeasterners buying bricks & mortar homes
