Amherst, Ohio is a small town in Summit County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,531 at the 2010 census. Amherst is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Amherst was Nicholas Hagerty in 1798. He and his wife Anna built a log cabin on the edge of a clearing near the present-day intersection of Dayton and High streets. They named their cabin "Hagersville", but it likely did not take long for them to realize that they needed more space so they laid out three lots on which they erected two stores and another home in 1802. In 1806, John Haggerty patented a land grant called "Hagerman's Purchase" which extended from what is now Delaware Street east to High Street and north to Dayton Avenue. It covered an area that included much of what is now Amherst Township as well as parts of Hillsboro Heights, Licking Valley, Mount Vernon Village, Blanchester Village and many other settlements throughout suburban Summit County. In 1807, Adam Clayton became one of the incorporators for the township when it was created from part of Medina Township. When Adams death in 1810 left his widow with 3½ acres (1 km²) bordering Scioto River outside her patent boundary she sold it back to him for $640 cash plus 10% interest payable every year until he received title to all future sales over $600 worth; this provision probably applied also to any lot or parcel extending into Scioto River except those lying within township limits where title reverted back to Mrs Adams upon sale by her husband's executors or assigns.
