Avon Lake is a town in Ingham County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. The unincorporated community of Bellefontaine is located in Avon Lake. The name "Avon" comes from an Ottawa River word meaning "a place where fish spawn." It was given to the town by its first settler, George Price. The current spelling of the name originated with a post office in 1874 which operated under that name until it became part of Ingham County on January 1, 1907. Avon's ties to nearby Lansing date back to 1868 when John Jacob Astor and his family moved from New York City and founded a trading post at what is now known as Avon Lake. They used the name 'Lansingburgh' for their new village but it was shortened to 'Avon' after they bought land here and laid out the town square on April 10, 1870. The original store building still stands today on Main Street in Avon Lakeshore! It was built by Henry Haverkamp and his son Charles Haverkamp around 1875-1876 as part of a larger shopping center that also included three other buildings - one for housing (the Town Hall), one for Masonic lodges (the Lodge House), and one for a sawmill (the Mill). Avon because he donated land to make it a settlement and also because of his contributions to local industry. Alfred D.Avon was born on December 10, 1853, in what is now East Liverpool, Ohio County, Pennsylvania. He worked as a salesman for J&R Glass Company before moving to Cleveland in 1881 to start his own business called the Alfred D.Avon Rubber Company. The company became one of the most successful rubber companies in America and its products were sold worldwide. After death in 1916, his widow donated all of their assets to charity so that everyone could have access to them without discrimination or taxes being taken from them
