The area that would become Bedford was first settled by Europeans in the late 17th century as part of what became known asthe Northwest Territory, which extended from present-day Delaware County to near Pittsburgh. In 1795, after a bitter struggle with neighboring Wyandotte County over control of a tract that included Bedford and much of modern southwestern Pennsylvania, Bedford was incorporated as a town by an act of the General Assembly under its new name. In 1801, following its incorporation into this state, Bedford became one of the initial locations for land sales to Settlers on the Great Lakes region during Ohio's so-called "uniform land law." This period saw rapid growth in both population and businesses in Bedford due to its location along major trade routes and transportation hubs; it soon emerged as one of America's most important agricultural towns.

Bedford was a small town in the northwest corner of Ohio, on the east bank of the Scioto River. The town population was 1,523 at the 2000 census. Bedford was founded by George Bedford and his family in 1796. The first post office was established in 1802. In 1830, Bedford became a township in Richland County. It lost its status as a township when Richland County were organized into two counties, but it reverted to Township status after Ohio became a state in 1871. The population of Bedford increased from 581 in 1940 to 2,157 at the 2000 census; however this increase may be due to immigration or new residents moving into the town since then. The first settler in what is now Bedford was George Bedford Sr., who arrived with his family from Georgia about 1796. He built a cabin on what is now North Main Street and named it "Bedford". George's son John also lived there for some time before moving away and founding another cabin on South Main Street (now East Main Street). These early pioneers are commemorated by three granite markers near their original homes: one at North Main Street, one at South Main Street, and one near East Main Street today (the last marker is located on Highland Drive). In 1830, when Richland County were organized into two counties, Bedford became part of Columbiana County which included all of northwest Ohio except for Portsmouth and Youngstown—still part of Virginia territory at that time. However becauseRichland County had become so populous with people coming from Indiana and other states after centralization of those states under James K.'s administration within Virginia following the Northwest Land Rush (1810-15), Bedfordsetookepurchased Lots Nos 4 & 5 along Brownstown Road just north of downtown Columbus from David Wickerbeck for $2 per acre or $24 total including land / improvements valued at $836 ($ Today’s equivalent would be $137 million).
