Bedford, Ohio is a town located in thecenter of the U.S. state of Ohio and part of the Dayton metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, Bedford had a population of 34,854. The area now known as Bedford was first settled by Native Americans in the 1790s. After the United States acquired land east of the Allegheny Mountains from Great Britain in 1803, settlers began to move into what is now Bedford from what is now parts of Akron and other nearby townships. In 1827, construction began on a courthouse and jail in Bedford which remained operational until it was destroyed by fire in 1868. A new courthouse and jail were built at present day University Avenue and Elm Street in 1885 after a $2 million appropriation was made by Governor John Q. Adams to improve transportation infrastructure within central Ohio. The original courthouse structure still stands today as part of downtown Dayton's Regency Circle district
