Bedford is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 10,870 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of Bedford County. It is located on the southern edge of the Appalachian Mountains, about 25 miles (40 km) south of Cleveland and 40 miles (64 km) north of Akron. The area that would become Bedford was first settled by Native Americans in 1795. In 1814, Colonel George Washington founded a trading post here while hepherding his army through what is now Bedford Township. The post continued to be operated by the military until 1825 when it became a civilian depot under United States control. In 1827, Bedford Township was organized, and its first white settler, David Brownell, bought land here for $2 per acre (1/8 mile²). He started to build a house on what later became known as Brownell's Hill which still stands today. By 1830, some 2,000 people had moved into Bedford from all over northeastern Ohio including Cleveland andAkron – many seeking opportunities in new settlements near production sites such as Upper Sandusky Bayou and Cuyahoga River Valley mines. In 1840–41, Bedford saw its first tornado when one struck the township while residents were inside their homes; only two people were reported injured out of more than 100 who were affected. That same year saw another significant event when General Andrew Jackson passed through central Ohio en route to battle with Mexico at Buena Vista Creek outside Dayton Ferry Landing; part of his army rested at this location before continuing on to Mexico City that September night."Andrew Jackson: A Biography" (1996), pgs 4-5 A few years later in 1845–46 an epidemic swept eastern Ohio killing thousands; however little attention was paid to Bedford until relatively recently because goldmining operations were becoming increasingly important in southern Appalachia during this time period.
