Bedford, Ohio is an unincorporated community in Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,095 at the 2010 census. It is located near the intersection of State Route 8 and State Route 144. Bedford was laid out in 1811 by Captain John Bedford and his wife Sarah Pemberton. Bedford is named after Captain John Bedford of Rhode Island who surveyed the area in 1811. The first settler in Bedford was Jobnathan Beattie who moved there from Knox County in 1800. In 1825, Bishop Peter Ziegler donated land to establish what became Columbiana University. In 1827, a post office called Bedford was established at the junction of state routes 8 and 144; it served until 1907. A store opened on the corner of state routes 8 and 144 in 1830, followed by a hotel in 1840-41. The town charter was granted on December 5, 1841; it provided for a schoolhouse, jailer, meeting house (1845), post office (1847), two stores (1848-49), blacksmith shop (1850-51), wagon factory (1852-57), flour mill (1858-59), sawmill ( 1860-66), cotton gin ( 1865) and lumberyard (1966). In 1870s George Washington Dixon built a tavern called "The White Horse" that still stands today on US Route 8 east of town limits. Bedford went through several name changes during its early years: Red Lion Taverns/The Greenhouse Tavern/Red Bedloe's Gentlemen's Hotel/The Fiery Furnace Inn/Captain John's Hundred Acres House/The General Storekeeper's Hotel/Beach House Tavern before settling on its current name in 1881 when it became part of Columbiana County under the auspices of the Ohio General Assembly as part of larger eastern border settlements including Newport News Heights and Newarkdean Court House which were all created as result of territorial acquisitions made following the American Civil War along with parts of West Liberty Township including present day Moreland Heights as well as Scioto Township which would become Medina County after one year’s congressional term had ended without any real progress being made towards creating new county boundaries resulting from conflict between Ohio Senators James Kapp and Elijah Holmes over land titles within Scioto Township specifically around Coshocton Creek – much like later conflicts surrounding Greater Cleveland’s boundaries would prove to be ultimately fruitless despite repeated efforts by both federal officials instrumental in late 19th century Western Reserve settlement development such as Ulysses S Grant etc.). In 1757, the United States Congress approved a land grant to David Bedford for $5,000. On November 1, 1757, Bedford founded the town of Bedford on what is now State Route 164 in rural Wayne County. The town was initially named for General George Washington. In 1812, Bedford became part of Ohio Territory. In 1815, it became a city and was renamed after President James K. Polk. It retained its original name until 1925 when it changed back to Bedford because of popular demand. The economy of Bedford has been based largely on agriculture since its founding; however, this sector has declined in recent decades due to competition from larger urban centers and other industries. The city's largest employer is the Cincinnati-based PNC Financial Corporation which operates two branches in the city: one downtown and one near Great American Ball Park. Other major employers include The Hamilton Company (a manufacturer of artificial turf), Covidant Pharmaceuticals (maker of penicillin), and Ford Motor Company’s Lincoln plants in nearby Youngstown and Trafford Heights; as well as several small businesses including a pet store and an ice cream shop).
