Berea is a city in the Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 32,098 at the 2010 census. It is the northernmost and most northerly of the five cities in Hamilton County. Berea is located on the banks of the Scioto River. The first inhabitants of what is now Berea were Native American, but by 1800 they had moved to this area because of improved soil and natural resources around them. The mills closed during prohibition in 1919 but restarted operations soon afterwards due to overwhelming demand from beer brewers across America who were not able to find enough tasteable water supplies outside of Detroit or Cleveland due to Prohibition regulations. From 1927 until 1998, Berea was part of Lucas Oil Leasing Company headquarters before moving into its current location on Scioto Avenue in 1928 with construction starting that year on what would eventually become one of Ohio's largest apartment complexes – two blocks long from end to end with over 1,500 units – which remains one of Ohio's most popular tourist destinations today (though originally built for oil company employees).
