Bexley was founded in 1785 by John Bexley and his wife Rebecca. The town was originally called "Bellefontaine." In 1804, the name changed to "Bexley" after Mayor James Bexley. The first post office in Bexley was established in 1807. In 1814, the village of Bexley merged with the township of Bellefontaine.
