Broadview Heights is a community located in the U.S. state of Ohio, just south of Dayton and east of Cincinnati. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,715. The community's name comes from two tracts of land that were given to it by Major General David Brody in 1819 as part of his gift to settlers in what would become Dayton Township. Over time, Brody became one of Broadview Heights' most prominent citizens and spent much time involved with its governance - serving on the town council (1858–1860), leading its schools (1871–1872), and becoming president (1901)of The United States National Bank (now Wells Fargo). He died suddenly on November 2, 1901 – just three days after being elected President – leaving broad shoulders but little experience behind him when it came to government or business administration. The town was named for Captain John Broadwater (1739-1814), one of the founders of Cincinnati, and his wife Anna Bowes (1747-1824). Captain John had been born at what is now North Bend, Indiana and died there at age 80 years old on February 10th, 1814 while commanding an American squadron during the War of 1812. A post office called Broadwater was established in 1806, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1829. The name change from Broadwater to Broadview Heights occurred because early residents began growing prosperous by marketing their products through local newspapers as "Broadway" rather than just "Broadway". In 1830, a schoolhouse and store were built near where today's High School stands; this became the nucleus of what would becomeBroadview Heights later that year when other local businesses joined forces to form a group known as The First National Bank of Lima Township which soon became one of America's largest banks with branches throughout central Ohio including Toledo and Cleveland. In 1857, two blocks north from where High School now stands another large business building which would be home to many important civic organizations downtown – The Trustee Company – became operational when it merged with several smaller banks forming The National Cash Register Company Of America which still operates out front today as One Franklin Square LLC!
