In 2016, Celina was chosen to be an American city by Mayor Andy Berke. The history of Celina goes back to 1812 when two men named John and James Fenton bought land near what is now downtown Celina and started building homes. The town quickly grew and by 1830 had a population of over 100 people. In 1833, the village became part of the new state of Ohio and saw its first growth spurt with the arrival of many immigrants from Russia, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and other parts of Europe. In 1870, another wave of immigrants arrived led by Captain John Whiteside who purchased land east of downtown for $5 per acre (the equivalent to $320 today). This area would become known as White Sands Park which remains one of Celina’s most popular destinations today for picnics and outdoor activities such as hiking and biking. But it wasn’t just newcomers that were making waves in Celina during these years; many businesses had also sprung up thanks to the opening up of the countryside around town – including a store on High Street called Joes Store which still exists today! One such business that thrived during this time was George Wertheimer’s Laundry where laundry detergent, dryers and other household supplies were sold at very low prices because there weren’t any big companies yet that wanted to set up shop in rural Ohio! But things changed rapidly after World War I when celinas great-grandfather Samuel Fenton opened his own grocery store right next door to Joes Store! This allowed celinas growing population more access to basic needs like groceries while also helping renovate some old buildings around town into apartments or shops! But it wasn’t all good news for celinas residents; due to this increase in business activity they started seeing more crime rates startto rise…but thankfully those days are behind us now!
