Dayton is a city in the state of Ohio, located on the southern edge of the greater Cleveland metropolitan area. The population was 671,362 at the 2010 census. Dayton is the third-largest city in Ohio and one of its ten largest cities by population. It has been called "The Athens of America" for its colleges and universities, as well as its manufacturing base and rural agricultural areas. The first permanent settler in what is now Dayton was Nicholas Negroponte, who arrived in 1796. settlement began with traders and travelers from Pennsylvania and other states who discovered rich coal seams near present-day Uniontown. By 1801, over 50 families had gathered around a small Indian village on the east bank of the Scioto River. In 1803, General Anthony Wayne's army burned downthe village to prevent it from becoming another Shawnee trading post. The following year saw a mass migration of settlers from Pennsylvania due to religious differences over slavery – many were Presbyterians, Methodists or Baptists; all wanted land that would be their own rather than shared with Native Americans. This group known as "The Quakers", also founded Perrysburg College (now Perrysburg State University) and several churches including Trinity Episcopal Church which still stands today on First Street in downtown Dayton while part of Wright State University campus). In 1835, Stephen Atherton laid out a Townsite Plan that formed the core of downtown Dayton today between Fourth Street SE and Fifth Street SE (later renamed Pemberley Square). This plan included an alley leading southward from Fourth Street to Market Square where streets continued northeastward until they met at Sixth Street NE; this alley became known as State Avenue/First Avenue NE after it ran through downtown to form what is now I-675/I-475 traffic circles today). On July 1st 1830 Samuel Barber opened his first store at Second & Broad Streets NW cornering Main Avenue SW In 1836 John Campbell opened his grocery store at Third & High Streets NW cornering Elmira Pike Today's Eyerston Road . . . . .
