Defiance, Ohio was founded in 1801 by the Shawnee and Delaware Indians. The area was first hunted by the Native Americans for their fur coats and other goods. A post office called Defiance was established in 1811, and a school was started in 1812. In 1840, the United States Territorial Legislature decided to grant an Indian reservation to the Shawnees. The land around Defiance became part of that reservation. In 1846, after a referendum resulted in majority approval of granting land to the Shawnees, President James K. Polk signed a bill giving them more than 1 million acres (400 km2) of land east of the Ohio River as well as $5 million in cash up front. The new reservation included parts of what are now: Butler County, Warren County, Ashtabula County, Erie County, and Holmes County. The population on the new reservation was about 12 thousand people when it opened up in 1847. By 1870, it had grown to over 60 thousand people. Most of this growth came from becoming part of the Ulysses S. Grant National Military Park which was created during World War I to honor General Ulysses S. Grant's service as Commanding Officer of American forces in Europe during World War I
