Eastlake is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the capital of Lucas County. The population was 54,675 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Ohio and one of its most populous areas. It is home to Eastlake University, founded in 1855, as well as several other colleges and universities. The name "Eastlake" is thought to be derived from two streams which flowed through the community—the West Branch Elk River and the East Branch Beaver Creek—and were combined to form one stream by local farmers in 1790. The current spelling was first used on a map published in 1814. In 1830, John Quincy Adams visited Eastlake while he was attending law school at Brown University and recommended that the town be named for him because "his father had lived there". On July 4, 1830, an act of Congress designated Eastlake as the capital of Ohio; this coincided with George Washington's Birthday celebration that year. A post office called Eastlake was established in 1836, but no mail was received until 1840 due to postal service being discontinued during President Andrew Jackson's term of office (1829–31). In 1844, James Kapp purchased land east of present day Elm Street and built what would become Kapp Hall on what is now Kapp Drive; this building served as both a schoolhouse and courthouse until 1870 when it burned down. Eastlake is a city in the Athens-Clarke County, Ohio, United States. The population was 24,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. Eastlake was founded in 1811 by Major General George Rogers Clark as a military post on the Scioto River. In 1824, it became an incorporated town. The first mayor of Eastlake was John Heckell. The city's origins can be traced back to 1811 when General George Rogers Clark arrived in Ohio as part of the American Expedition under President James K. Polk and his brother OglethorpeClark to explore western Pennsylvania and establish new borderlands with Mexico. As part of this expedition, Clark established a military post on the Scioto River near present-day Eastlake after scouting out land for future settlements around what is now Columbus, Ohio and Xenia, Ohio (then part of Preble County). In 1824, Eastlake became an incorporated town when it merged with Xenia from Preble County following its incorporation into state government that year. At its peak in 1840, Eastlake had a population of 10,000 people; however by 1850 its population had shrunk to 6,500 due to decline in trade along the Scioto River and other factors such as increased migration from central Ohio into neighboring states during that time period. However, following increased commercial activity throughout central Ohio due to railroads being built through that region during that time period and consequent job growth for local residents within those communities – including Eastlake –the population rebounded by 1860 thanks largely to waves of Irish immigrants who were attracted to new opportunities available in Central America during those years despite apprehension about returning home after traveling there without proper documentation or authorization from their families back home (this phenomenon also contributed to downtown business boom times during this era)). During prohibition years (1921-1933), anti-alcohol sentiment ran high among many eastern European immigrants living within Lima Township because they were not allowed access to alcohol while living inside their own countries – something which locals found amusing given how much easier life would have been if they could have just purchased beer or wine at local liquor stores like those operated by Dutch Americans and others prior thereto). Consequently some citizens began afixing "No Alcohol" signs outside local businesses beginning in 1922 until 1933 when Prohibition ended nationally (it should be noted that most eastern European immigrants did not openlydisplay any opposition towards Prohibition – rather they chose instead To ignore it completely).
