Fairfield is a city in Fairfield County, Ohio, United States. The population was 27,681 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Fairfield County. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Fairfield was Nicholas Kimball in 1811 and he named it Kimballstown after his father-in-law, Nathan Kimball. The first store in what would become Fairfield opened on Main Street in 1814 and was called "The Exchange". In 1830, John Copley founded the village of Xenia which became the town of Xenia in 1832. On November 3, 1836, Xenia merged with Fairfield to form a city under the name of "Fairfield". In 1840–41 Judge Amos Kendall built a log courthouse on what is now Market Square that served as county seat until1846 when Xenia took over that function and Courthouse Square remained the government center until 1915 when it was moved to downtown Fairfields new City Hall building which still stands today. In 1865–66 Augustus Kelley donated land for a public cemetery and soon afterwards began construction of interments there which continues to this day. In 1870–71 James Kapp donated an extensive tract of land east of Xenia for educational purposes – now known as Kapp Park – and also began construction on what would eventually become East Campus at University Circle (now Central State University). Kapp's donation helped make East Campus one of Columbus' most successful university campuses from its inception through the 1960s when it amalgamated with other universities to form Nationwide University (later UNiversity College). The downtown business district that surrounds Kapp Park remains one of Columbus' most vibrant areas today with many major retailers including Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney Inc., Macy's Inc., Ford Motor Company and numerous small businesses lining Broad Street between Westminster Road and Hamilton Avenue. In 1907 Commissioners George French and John Schieffer organized a water system improvement project within fairgrounds boundaries using methods such as reverse osmosis followed by gravity filtration to provide potable water for all citizens without expensive outside sources like cisterns or wells; this system remain operative until 1935 when an improved pump system replaced it due to lack of funding.. It wasn't until 1912 that electric streetlights were inaugurated along Broad Street between Westminster Road and Hamilton Avenue making fairness field one stoplight from east to west during the evening hours; at night these lights supplemented streetlights located near downtown across High Street from courthouses continuing until 1967 when central lighting became standard throughout fairgrounds.. From 1899 through 1905 Governor James Atherton funded various projects withinfairground boundaries such as: new Streetscaping Regulations were created providing for regulation/restructuringof streetscaping by City Officials responsible for maintaining municipal streetscape; sidewalks were graded according to design standards Requiring only six inches depth from curb to ground deep; Public Works Director Wm Hoad designed new drainage ditches withinfairgrounds borders connecting several smaller creeks/lakes adjacent thereto - these ditches will continue into century future serving various needs including stormwater management .. A large number civic organizations formed during this time period including: Cincinnati Club (founded 1902), American Legion Post #2 (established 1903), Columbiana Society (founded 1904), Rotary Club #2775 (established 1906), Kiwanis Club #4373 (organized 1913) etc.; most notable being Dayton Daily News Syndicate who purchased Journal Register 9 January 1922Issue Number 1st PAGE 2nd SECTION - "DETROIT NEWS" . This cooperative effort resulted in 20 years uninterrupted publication service throughout Greater Dayton ..

Fairfield is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,824 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1796 and incorporated as a village in 1802. Fairfield became an unincorporated community in 1900. The name of the town is derived from the fairgrounds which were located near the present-day downtown area of Fairfield. The first settlers to what is now Fairfield arrived on April 6, 1796, when Nicholas Houghton and his family set out from Portsmouth, Rhode Island for what would become Muskingum County. They named their new land "Faireboro", after one of their own ships that had come downriver before they did. That same year, Captain John Sprague and his party arrived with two vessels and landed aroundNW of where we stand today on the banks of the Scioto River. Captain Sprague's group started building cabins along what is now State Route 20 while he himself built a small fortification known as Fort Sprague on the hill overlookingpresent dayStateRoute 20and Fort Sprague Creek It wasn't until 1800 that law enforcement began to be established within Fairfieldlimits by Captains George Crayer and Andrew Rankin who both served with distinction during the War of 1812 In 1809 Peter Ketcham settled upon some land southeast of present day State Route 20 along Scioto River which would later become part of Fairfield . He named it "Ketcham Heights" after himself In 1814 Alexander Caldwell settled on a tract northwest of Ketcham Heights , naming it Caldwell Hill after himself In 1830 David Baughman acquired adjoining tracts east and southeast of Caldwell Hill then also called Caldwell Hill . This gave rise to our current name -Fairfield- which originates from these original names On December 12th 1830 local residents decided to incorporate as a village under the leadershipof Druben Swartzschildt who served as its first mayor In 1835 Nathan Silliman purchased adjacent tracts including those lying northwest (now northeast)ofthe village limits from Druben Swartzschildt thereby creatingwhat are now Northwest corner streets within our boundaries

The first settler in the town was John Klingle. The town began to grow rapidly after it became a stop on the stagecoach route between Xenia and Toledo.
