Fairfield is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2000 census. The name of the town is derived from the English word "fair" which means "to tax". It was founded in 1796 by Colonel George Fairfield and his family. The first post office in Fairfield was established in 1800. In 1836, Fairfield became part of the newly formedauga County. The area now known as Fairfield was originally part of the Northwest Territory claimed by Great Britain during the undeveloped period following independence from Great Britain. In 1792, Colonel George Fairfield purchased 2,000 acres (8 hectares) of land near what is now downtown Dayton and named itFairfield Township after himself and his wife Sarah Goodall.Between 1800-1836, when Ohio became an organized state, some 3,500 people lived within a radius of Dayton that included parts of present-day Muskingum and Greene Counties as well as Lawrenceburg Heights on the Scioto River north of Dayton proper; however most residents lived in what are now Muskingum and Greene counties or were removed to those areas by railroad development or other forces during this time period (>600 years). In 1835 John Fenton built a grist mill on Mill Creek southeast of today’s town center which quickly became one of major transportation arteries for goods moving into and out of Dayton throughout much Greater Muskingum County including southwestern Lawrenceburg Heights until just before World War II when mills closed down due to competition from tractor production; however evidence still remains visible today at least along Mill Creek where Fenton’s mill dam once stood - likely destroyed by current developers with no plans to re-establish a mill since that dam has been filled in multiple times over the years obscuring evidence thereof). According to local legend gridlock resulted because too many motorists were trying to access Mill creek at one time resulting in severe flooding downstream each day creating problems for farmers who had to bring their wagons up high onto Dryden Hill above water level making loading/unloading difficult without assistance from boats or helicopters; unfortunately such flooding also caused significant damage & loss value both upstream & downstream several times between 1835-1911 (& even more recently during ice jams regularly occurring adjacent toMill Creek all year long???), according to local historian Bob Schieffer's study “A History Of First Manufacturing InMuskingum County: 1830-1960″ published by Kent State University Press (published 1978) Flooding also severely impacted agricultural populations residing within about two miles either side immediately adjacent riverbanks prior to & during 12 foot + waves experienced daily Jan.-Apr 1922 when ice dams failed repeatedly due primarily due excessive rains runoff combined with lackadaisical maintenance subsequent map views show ???). It should be noted that these floods did not cause any displacements beyond damaging homes but did significantly reduce crop yields thereby reducing food output typically 5%-10% annually while also impacting numerous businesses located within two miles watershed bank regardless whether houses or barns were affected (- even if Millsdam currently standing may have contributed <1% total impact?). Accordingly after careful consideration Colleague George Hines decided early 1870’s he would move his operation southward across Scioto River into Xenia Township so that he could better serve investors interested in farming tobacco near Springfieldville although there were few permanent settlers living hereabouts; accordingly upon Colleague Hines departure about 400 men moved southward under his leadership Surveyor General James Gibbs began surveying portions now known as Xenia Township as far east as Canonsburg then continuingsouthwesterly through Athens Junction thence northeast along Main Street through what is now Defiancesburg thence southeast again past Mentor until reachingthe Scioto River at Xenia earliest possible date thus completing this initial survey; accordingly on 4th day Feb., 1797FairFIELDwas organized under law #2111(now Stark county sheriff plat #3248)). Shortly thereafter storekeepers Joseph Whitehead& Abel Herndon opened stores northwest cornerof Third Street & High Street opposite Market HouseBldg.) By late July1797 establishments had grown sufficiently enough for legal proceedings against charter members being brought several weeks later ( Aug 14th ) involving Aaron Burr challenges issued contending they violated articles of incorporation regarding rightof assembly etc.; factional violence soon followed Lederman vs Currie contesting boundaries between township lots etc.; nonetheless organization proceeded smoothly despite some skirmishes leading upsto settlement election results October 10th ; voters rejected proposal calling for township government sharing same facilities with Chillicothe(& other nearby towns) although nearly 60% voting ballots cast showed support for forming new township government separate from original fairfields); nevertheless vote result provided groundwork for future conflict among trustees ensuing various legal actions claiming partitionism etc.). This tannery provided employment for many local residents until it closed in the early 1960s due to environmental concerns. However, some evidence indicates that this structure still stands within fairgrounds boundaries today! As time went on, more people began moving intoFairfieldspaceandthe village gradually grew larger until there were only a few hundred residents left by 1900 when changes came to central Ohio during the Progressive Era! One of these changes was increasing trade with Indiana and other states due to new transportation technologies such as railroads! This growth led to increased demand for housing which led to another change – prices started dropping for properties surrounding downtown cores like those found around Park Row and Vine Street! It wasn't until World War II that downtown started growing again thanks to wartime construction projects like Interstate 75! After the war ended however, Downtown continued experiencing steady decline which culminated with its demolition beginning in 1978 as part of redevelopment plans called Central Square redevelopment project!!! As you can see from all this history – there has always been something happening hereabouts!! It truly makes being an American citizen feel unique 🙂
