Fairfield is a small town in Hardin County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It lies along the Ohio River and is surrounded by Clinton Township to the east and Medina Township to the west. The first European explorers to visit what is now Fairfield were French traders in 1795. They named it after François-René de Fairley, Sieur de la Salle's aide-de-camp on his tour of America that year. The first permanent settler in what is now Fairfield was Nicholas Wright in 1811. He erected a log cabin on an island in the river near where henow resides as part of a effort to settle land grants from President James K. Polk for veterans of the Ulysses S. Grant Expedition (1862–1865). In 1824, John Corder bought 5 acres (20 hectares) south of present day Dayton off of State Road 22 and laid out a town called Westville on what are now known as Wright Street and North Main Street. On July 4, 1830, Corder erected a new courthouse which still stands today across from First Baptist Church on Delaware Avenue north of I-71/I-670 junction. The Village also included a schoolhouse built around 1834 which burned down in 1876 but was replaced by another building which still stands today across from First Baptist Church on Delaware Avenue north of I-71/I-670 junction In 1830 Samuel Granger purchased 3 acres (10 hectares) southeast of present day Dayton off state road 22 for $100 cash only and laid out Harmon township with 7 homesites totaling 45 feet wide (.16 m), 12 feet deep (.48 m), 50 rods long (.16 km), each plot measuring one acre (). Granger also built 2 stores and a post office at this site later renamed Harmon City limits when it became part of Westville There were no services available within Harmon township until much later when roads were improved and electric street lights installed . In 1840 Daniel Granger imported 10 head of cattle from Missouri while living near Independence so he could start raising hay there . That same year Captial Grange acquired 6 more acres (20 hectares) northeast of Dayton for $150 cash only after winning an election against incumbent David Baldwin who had been appointed supervisor by Governor Edwin Mears This acquisition added 1 more home site to Harmon township making it 8 sites total with dimensions ranging from 0 feet wide (.00 m) all the way up to 36 feet wide (.14 m). From 1840 through 1860 about 100 people lived in Harmon township including farmers, mechanics, blacksmiths etc . However due in large part to wars between Great Britain & France starting around 1861 these numbers decreased as many Americans decided not to take sides during these hostilities . This trend continued into the late 19th century as American citizens returned home & businesses reopened When Ohio became Confederate territory following secessionist efforts during 1861 – 1865 many residents decided not migrate to newly minted Confederate states such as Virginia orTennessee because they felt their rights would be respected under Union rule . In 1870 Samuel Gregg sold his interest in Harmon Township back to Daniel Granger giving him final ownership over all 8 sites totaling 172 square miles (582 sq km) By 1880 there were only 9 homes left standing within Harmon Township with most having been destroyed by fire or weather over time

The town of Fairfield, Ohio was founded in 1795 by the settlers of what is now Fairfield Township. The first settler in the township was John Aiken. The following year, Captain Benjamin Logan and his men set out from Portsmouth, New Hampshire on a journey across the United States to find a new home for themselves. They arrived at Fairfield on October 25th, 1795. At that time, there were only eight families living in the township and they all started farming their land. soon after they had erected some rudimentary homes. In 1801, Christopher Daynes moved into the township and began to operate a grist mill which he named "Daynes Mill." By 1830, there were over 100 residents inFairfield Township and most of them were farmers or mechanics. In 1836, James Kapp acquired 640 acres of land southeast of Fairfield and laid out a town called Kappstown on it. He named it after himself and his father-in-law, Jacob Kapp Sr., who had given him initial permission to establish such a town. On July 1st of that year, Kapptown became an incorporated village with its own board of trustees and police force! Kappstown experienced rapid growth during its early years; by 1840 there were over 400 people living in it! But within five years thereofgrowth stopped and only fifty people remained within the limits ofthe original settlement when Congress passed the Homestead Act on April 6th,. 1846 . This act allowed American citizens who could afford to purchase land east of latitude 42° N to begin building farms thereon . So whileFairfield continued to grow slowly until around 1870 when it reached its current population size (around 1200 persons), neighboring towns like Cleveland received larger numbers of immigrants just as America emerged as a major power again!

The town continued to grow and improve its infrastructure, including a new courthouse and jail in 1836. The city experienced rapid growth during the 20th century, reaching a peak population of 20,000 people in 1950. However, as economic opportunity diminished during the Great Depression and World War II, Fairfield began to decline until its current population of under 10,000 people is based on agriculture only.
