During World War II, Franklin played a significant role in supplying munitions for the war effort through its assembly line manufacturing activities located near Muncie and Decatur counties. Today, Franklin is a vibrant community with notable cultural attractions such as The Benjamins brewery complex which produces craft beers distributed throughout Greater Dayton; art galleries such as Mockingbird Fine Arts; several restaurants including Parma Pizza Palace; two high schools--Ohio State University's Wexner School of Medicine and Warren Wilson High School--and several smaller businesses make up its core economy along with many residential neighborhoods providing access to nature trails or shopping opportunities within walking distance of central business district locations such as Downtown Franklin or Bellevue Avenue North.
Franklin became a town in 1811 when it was laid out as a part of the Township of Union. It was named for General George Washington. The first settler in Franklin was Isaac James, who built a house on the site that is now known as the Independence Hall. In 1815, the first store was opened in Franklin by Joshua Green and his wife Rebecca Green. By 1830, there were 10 stores and 5 tanneries in Franklin. In 1836, Franklin became an incorporated town with a population of 100. On July 12, 1837, Franklin and other towns in Athens County amalgamated to form the University of Ohio City School District
