Galion, Ohio is a small town in the eastern part of the state of Ohio near Chicago. It is known for its huge munitions plant, which began production in 1876 and continues to produce ammunition today. The plant provides ammunition for both the US military and civilian users, as well as making arms components such as barrels and stocks. Ammunition history in Galion began with artillery shells used by the United States during World War I. In 1916, an American company named Winchester Manufacturing Company produced shotguns containing rounds made from a new type of cartridge called “3-in-1” that was designed to combine accuracy with a wide range of speed. This new cartridge was able to fire three rounds per second instead of one per minute like other shotguns using traditional round bored cartridges. Because this new cartridge could be fired rapidly and accurately, it became very popular among hunters and Pistol shooters who wanted more than one shot at a time when hunting game. In 1922, Winchester merged with Remington Arms Company creating what would become America’s largest firearms manufacturer. In 1933, General Electric Corporation purchased Winchester Manufacturing Company for $2 million dollars making it an affiliate company within GEICO Insurance Companies (the predecessor of GEICO). At this point, Winchester Ammunition had become an important part of American manufacturing not only because of its quality but also due to its cross-country distribution network which allowed it to reach everyone in America who needed ammunition including farmers markets and gun shows. The first known permanent settlement in what is now Galion Township was made by George Washington Galion in 1790, when he purchased land from the Huron tribe for $10 per acre. In 1802, he donated land to be used as a township election precinct; it became known as "Galion Township." He and his wife Occia formed a partnership and built a tavern called The White Horse Tavern on Clinton Street in 1814 which served as their home until they sold it to John Halleck in 1825. In 1850, General Andrew Jackson occupied the township while campaigning against John Cranch during the Mexican-American War and ordered all settlers to leave their homes within two weeks or face eviction. A group of about 50 residents defied orders and remained barricaded inside their homes until relieved by federal troops under General Winfield Scott on October 8th. Many residents moved away after this incident, but some returned over time to establish new villages around what are now downtown Galion and Clinton streets west of US-27 (now I-71). A post office was established at Galion in 1857, and remained open until 1959; its last letter carrier being Mrs. Lillian Bemis from Canfield Heights, Ohio who delivered mail from March 9th through September 3rd 1909. The village near today's downtown Galion experienced significant growth following World War II due to military production facilities located there such as Ford Motor Company's Willow Run Arsenal airframe plant which manufactured fighters and bombers for America's war effort; parts for these planes were produced here including most of the metal needed for bodywork such as wings, tails & fuselages etc.; furthermore many local businesses grew up around this industry including fabricators such as JBL Aviation Corporation which manufactured parts for fighter planes & bombers at Willow Run starting with P-47 Thunderbolts & P-51 Mustang series aircrafts before becoming Lockheed Martin Corporation's main supplier for advanced aviation systems throughout much of Asia etc.. This resulted in an increase not only in population but also housing stock which began moving into what are now downtownGalion properties beginning around 1960 followed by other properties nearby over time culminating with a large development project initiated by Mayor Robert Wagner called "Town Center" which included construction of numerous buildings including: a library/residence hall/cafeteria/theater complex featuring 2 theaters (- one newly renovated), dozens of storefronts (some still existing), bank/employment center (now Pizza Place), doctor clinic (nowrx Orthopedics) -all completed between 1970 & 1980 when then President Richard Nixon declared certain areas redevelopment zones providing tax breaks & incentives to developers etc...All said & done DowntownGalions current population reaches 10K+ people monthly!
