Galion, Ohio is a small town located in the tri-state area of Ohio, Indiana and Michigan. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Galion community was founded by Irish immigrants in 1815. In 1836, James Ketchum purchased land near Galion on which he built a sawmill and millrace to power his own flour mills. The first post office opened in 1840 and the town's first school was built in 1845. A railroad arrived in 1865 and helped increase trade and commerce within the community; but after a few years of operation Galion's economy died away until World War II when production recommenced for the United States war effort. Galion has had several changes over its history including its incorporation as a village in 1902; annexation by Canton Township (now Delaware Township) in 1907; becoming a city with resident control during World War I; being closed off to nonresidents during Prohibition while under federal prohibition jurisdiction; becoming an open-air shopping center following repeal of prohibition on July 3, 1933; becoming an agricultural center following passage of the Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1938 which raised prices for marketing commodities such as eggs, flour, butter and other goods produced by farmers; suffering from damage from Hurricane Floyd in 1999 which destroyed many homes and businesses within radius of Galion before dissipating into night clouds across much of southeastern Ohio that evening One significant event that took place around Galion during its early years was construction on what would become known as "The Gilded Cage" or "Big House". This large brick structure stands today as one of downtown's most iconic landmarks with views north across Lake Erie towards Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. In 1850,Galion became part of the new state of Ohio when it was created from portions of Indiana and Michigan.
