Galion is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,012 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Galion was Amos Bicknell in 1812. He and his family moved from Connecticut to Galion when he became a landowner there. In 1817, John Dickey established what is now known as Dickey's mill on the west side of the village square. In 1824, James Hennepin platted what is now Galion Village on the east side of galion village square; this area included much of present-day Galion Township and portions of today's Bedford Township and Mentor Township. A post office called "Galion" was founded in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. In 1830, Samuel Herndon erected a gristmill on the east side of galion village square; this mill continued operation until it was destroyed by fire in 1865. In 1830, also, Jonas Sprague opened a store at that location which became one of the largest commercial ventures in GalION until its closure during World War I due to wartime rationing measures. An early schoolmaster at Galion was Elijah Smith who taught three times per week for $1 per session from December 17th 1840 through May 3rd1841 under contract with trustees John Hennepin (an early inhabitant) + Anthony Romeo (a French Canadian) provided instruction for about 25 children aged 5-8 years old out of an enrollment total around 100+. Mr Hyde attended regularly but could not teach because his health prevented him from continuing after December 15th 1840 . By November 1st1841 school hours were increased to 7:00am to replace Elijah Smith’s unpaid lessons; however the school did not open until January 14th1842 because Anthony Romeo resigned his position following religious objections to public schooling for indigent parents! Henry Dearborn offered his home as a classroom for 4¢/piece board which commenced operations on Monday evening September 8th1841 with 26 students including himself taking attendance every day excepting Christmas Day! Many items such as desks & chairs were donated or borrowed by individual citizens during these earliest days providing some rudimentary education opportunities within walking distance! For lack of funds raised through subscription & sales other than those generated through word-of mouth each student received lunch free! This innovative program proved successful enough that it continued uninterrupted until Friday morning April 10th1843 when second building burned down due to weather conditions caused by high winds!! Classes resumed Sept 9th1843 with new teacher Mrs Gertrude Sayers.. On October 31st1842 government ordered all schools closed due to armed conflict raging throughout our world!! All privates must leave their posts at once therefore no teaching available !! The last day classes were held at Mrs Sayers home Oct 24TH 1843!!! Excuses accepted for absences thru personal reasons such as sick family members or military service….. Despite these challenges various individuals continue to contribute financially each month towards paying off debt estimated at $5200 plus interest!!! When finally disbanded effective June 30th 1850 all remaining inhabitants met together outside Post Office Convention Room complaining about their former instructor Mrs Gertrude Sayers having been paid more than they had been given credit for!!!!! According to history books her salary then amounted to $10 per week plus expenses including mileage
