In 1828, Galion became part of Trumbull County when it was formed from portions of seven other counties. That year, local residents voted to rename their settlement after George Washington and John Adams because they felt they were two of America's most distinguished leaders during its early days. The original courthouse building still stands in downtown Galion and is used as a museum today. The building also served as the city hall until it burned down in 1976. Today, there are several modest buildings nearby that have been used as residences or businesses since then. One significant aspect of Galion's history is its role as a stop on the Underground Railroad during the 1800s; many fugitive slaves passed through here before reaching freedom in Canada or other parts of North America. In fact, one famous fugitive slave who lived in Galion for some time was abolitionist Lucy Stone (1819-1872).

In 1828, they donated land to the city of Cleveland so that Cleveland could be founded as an agricultural town. The city grew rapidly, becoming one of the most important cities in Ohio during the early 19th century. The Caldwells lost their land holdings in 1830, but continued to live in Galion until their death in 1892.
