Girard, Ohio is a small town located in the southern portion of the state of Ohio. The population as of the 2010 census was 3,721. Girard is part of the Athens-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Girard was platted in 1824 by Captain John Pemberton and his family on land that had been purchased from the Shawnee nation by Colonel Robert Rogers. The first settler in what is now Girard was Peter Smith who arrived in 1827. In 1830, Hiram Lewis erected a log cabin on what is now Maple Street. A store and post office were built here in 1836 by Amos Kendall and James Killebrews. The first school in Girard opened its doors to students on October 28, 1837 under the name of Lebanon Academy. It was moved to its present location at 5th and Elm Streets in 1839 when it became part of Athens Township schools system. On February 14, 1840, three young men – Jonas Gilmore, Samuel Gardner (later known as George Washington Gardner), and Ezra Stroud –Induced a fire that destroyed most of their farming equipment and burned down the academy building; this event is generally considered to be the beginnings of Girard's local fireworks industry which still flourishes today! In 1850, Captain John Pemberton sold his interest in Girard Township to Jno Henshaw for $1 per acre! This year also saw an important development when Judge Solomon Shealy donated land adjacent to his home for use as a public square; thus began what would later become downtown Girard with its large brick structure currently visible from all areas of town! In 1865, another important donation occurred when Mrs. Julia King donated money for streetlights along Main Street; these lights have since been replaced by modern day landmarks such as FirstEnergy Stadium which stands across from downtown girards old school buildings! A new courthouse was constructed south side Main Street between High Street and Elm Avenue during 1907-1908 by Drury & Waddell architects under contract with then County Treasurer Edward Murchison (for whom Murchison Park now stands). This courthouse served as courtrooms until 1971 when Superior Court moved into newly refurbished buildings on Sixth Avenue just east of Market Square! In 1916 Local School District No 9 merged with Athens School District No 2 creating one comprehensive school system that operated out of two elementary schools (grades PK-6) on South Broadway/High Road while two middle schools (grades 7-8) were located westside off I-675 north approximately 4 blocks north along North Broadway/High Road until they closed administrative offices/equipment storage facilities within city limits circa 1985 due to budget cuts!! One subsequent addition included Francis Xavier Ryan Elementary School grades PK-5 which opened fall 2006 after years behind schedule following arson threats against other Catholic elementary properties !! What followed has been nothing short than an explosion growth rate for this once small town exceeding 3+ million residents (+/- 10% annually) !! Incredibly enough despite this unprecedented growth rate there remain few if any traces remaining or preserved original infrastructure or architecture!!! Girard was founded in 1792 by an Englishman, Jonathan Girard. The town is named for the French cleric and philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who lived in nearby Ottawa for many years. Girard became a center of education and culture in the region, and hosted such luminaries as John Adams and James K. Polk. In 1814, Girard was destroyed by a fire that killed more than 100 people. In the 1860s, Girard came under attack from Confederate forces during the American Civil War. Despite this, the town continued to grow and prosper until World War II when it was devastated by bombing raids from the Japanese Imperial Army. After the war, Girard bounced back quickly with new development projects including a hospital and numerous stores. Today, Girard is a sleepy agricultural community with few tourist attractions but plenty of history to keep visitors entertained.
