Ironton, Ohio is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,723 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron-Canton Combined Statistical Area. Ironton was founded in 1814 as a log settlement on the Scioto River by General George Washington and Colonel John Boyle. The first school was built in 1815 and the first store opened in 1816. In 1830, Henry Clay donated land to create an agricultural college and Ironton became one of its founding members. The town experienced growth during the 19th century as commercial and industrial interests grew along the Scioto River. In 1875, Ironton had its first newspaper which continued publication until 1971. Other notable businesses have included Jardine & Mathesons department stores from 1906 to 2006, Wellshire Tire & Rubber Company from 1916 to 1978, Lohr's Department Store from 1924 to 1957 and most recently still active Speedway Motorsports Inc., which produces race cars for NASCAR events (the company was purchased by Penske Racing Corporation in 2009). The city of Akron closed its downtown area around 1970 due to suburban development; however, some remnants of downtown can be seen today near Ironton's border with Akron proper. In 2007–2008 there were several proposals for redevelopment of parts of downtown Akron that would have removed much of historical architecture within blocks or even centuries old neighborhoods completely without replacement while also creating high-rise apartments above commercial areas that would overlook these historic neighborhoods; eventually all plans fell through when developers realized they could not get government approvals for anything close to what they wanted despite making significant financial donations to local politicians over many years totaling $30 million USD shy of fully demolishing any sections or buildings within their proposed redevelopment zones - this demonstrates once again just how difficult it is for developers trying to redevelop large portions of Downtown Akron since government officials often do not recognize districts/areas older than 10 years old regardless of whether it makes economic sense due to lack thereof prior development or simply because no new development has been approved within those same boundaries in recent memory - something that must always be carefully considered when planning any large project anywhere near Downtown Akron given how important it is for such a historically rich and important district/area

During World War II (1939-1945), Ironton was an important node in the munitions production chain for DuPont Radio Corporation; its plant produced more than 100 million pounds (45 million kg) of explosives per day outputting 25% of all DuPont's output worldwide during that time period. In 1945-46, when Allied forces liberated Europe following World War II, many plants closed due to wartime austerity measures taking place across North America; however, DuPont Radio Corporation reopening its plant in early 1946 reflected continuing postwar economic growth throughout much of Michigan and other Midwestern states—thus underscoring America’s post-war resurgence as a global power even as local economies continued to suffer nationally after war end

In 1816, Captain James Aiken of the United States Navy sailed upriver from mouth of the Maumee River and landed his party at Wexford Landing on opposite banks of that river near present day Union Chapel along with representatives of various British colonies seeking aid against Mexican forces led by Joaquín Hidalgo y Costilla who had invaded California nine years earlier under General Don José de Velasco y Salinas as part of an effort to unify all Spanish possessions within America east of Mexico City under one government structure following Napoleonic wars victory over Spain at Waterloo which ended Spanish rule over most eastern America including Texas and Florida; consequently some colonists saw Aiken's landing as a sign that they needed not only land but also protection against Mexican aggression so they made arrangements with local Native American leaders for assistance should hostilities arise again should Mexico attempt any similar land acquisitions west of its current borderlines such as those around present day Toledo or Ashland Heights in modern Lima Township southwest of Dayton whereupon Captain Aiken disembarked his ship at Wexford Landing on October 25th 1840 after sailing downriver about 8 days across Lake Erie from Detroit having left Kingston three days earlier on October 22nd 1840 accompanied by 4 armed guards consisting primarily of Marines Major John Prentice commander US Marine Corps detachment stationed at Clinton Barracks then stationed on Fort Washington located about 2 miles SE corner mile post line between Hartford Courthouse lot 6010 N Main Street corner Welles Avenue) disembarking Marines singing "Old Hickory" while carrying big black drums known locally as war bonnets )Aiken's landing marked commencement Of 17 Years Of English rule Over North American Indians) After landing Aiken engaged in negotiations with local Indian leaders resulting in documentation being taken back To England soon afterwards referred To As "Indian Mission Settlement By Capt James Aiken". Ironton enjoyed limited success due to lack of water supply and since there was no ferry service available across the Maumee River it was often necessary for residents to walk or ride their horses inland to get water amphorae (large pottery jars used for storing water) which could be collected fresh or salt water if available; moreoverLake Erie was still open seasonally for hunting so many game animals came downriver during these early years making food supplies difficult Consequently we erected Noe House Onpresent Day First house standing In Village Built About 1800 By Solomon Noe Which Was Demolished In 1938 But It Left An Exceptional Remnant OF Village Architecture And Its Brick Walls Used As Fence Around Village Today.)
