Lorain is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lorain County. The population was 54,627 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Lorain County and part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Founded in 1814 by settlers from Bedford Township, Pennsylvania, Lorain became a village in 1826 and then a town in 1837 after becoming an independent municipality. The current name comes from George Washingtons first visit to America on July 4, 1792, when he named a small stream "Lorain" after his birthplace, Lodi (now Allentown). In 1850 it had a population of 12,824; by 1860 it had reached 46,527. The area that now makes up Lorain was settled by families of Delaware Germans who arrived during the early 19th century as workers on large leather plantations in what is now northeastern Ohio. By 1870 most of the township had been developed with factories for making munitions and other items related to war production; however some farming remained until1920 when industrial development began again throughout much of northeast Ohio among farmers who found new ways to produce food using technology such as growing corn for ethanol or manufacturing plastics and other materials out of coal ash In 1920 Lorain became part of Akron Municipality which also included two adjacent townships: Mayfield Heights and Uniontown proper (renamed Cleveland Heights following approval by voters in November 1922). After years primarily served as an agricultural center due to its location near major shipping points on Lake Erie while still remaining within Cleveland-Akron-Canton MSA, development around Lorain accelerated beginning around 1950 driven largely by suburban growth within nearby Mayfield Heights/Uniontown neighborhoods outside downtown areas The rapid suburbanization that took place during this period resulted in increasing pollution levels along Interstate 69 leading to increased pressure on local officials to act against these problems resulting initially from concerns about loss of tax revenue but eventually culminating with passage of legislation establishing more stringent fuel emissions standards for automobiles beginning in 1970 known as "The Clean Air Act". These regulations led to increased car ownership within inner-ring suburbs bordering Greater Cleveland while also pressuring businesses located there into starting their own vehicle maintenance programs thus creating what has come to be known as "the Green Belt" – an area surrounding major metropolitan areas where environmental awareness continues to be high despite increasingly unfavorable economic conditions
