Lyndhurst is a town in Summit County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lyndhurst was founded in 1814 as an early frontier settlement by General David Griggs and his wife Sarah Lyon Griggs. The first post office opened in 1815. In 1834, Lyndhurst became a town under the jurisdiction of the newly created Summit County. The first school in Lyndhurst was built on land donated by Josiah Hocking in 1814 and served as a school for three years before being closed due to lack of student enrollment. A new school building was erected on land donated by James Bobert around 1830; it had 12 classrooms and served until 1906 when it was replaced by a new building that still stands today. The current elementary/middle school building was built between 1928 and 1930; it has room for over 300 students with 64 classrooms and serve grades kindergarten through 8th grade today. Lyndhurst experienced rapid growth following World War II when thousands of war-related workers moved into the community from surrounding towns during the war's boom period. In 1952, Lyndhurst became one of four villages (the others were Centerville, Holmesville, and Wrightstown) within Summit County to be granted local government status based on their population size rather than their geographic location within county boundaries - this gave them more control over their own affairs than had been granted to previous villages). This status would continue until 2003 when all municipalities within Summit County were given statewide authority via an act passed by the Ohio General Assembly which merged most of Summit County into Greater Cleveland regionally speaking. In 1957, Lyndhurst voters overwhelmingly approved a 0% sales tax increase to support education programs within the community while also increasing funding for town services such as street cleaning, trash collection, watermain replacement/maintenance, library renovation/equipment purchases etc.. The area that now Lyndhurst was first settled by Germans in 1796. In 1825, the Township of Lyndhurst was organized and named for General John Atherton, who had fought in the American Revolution and then served as a brigadier general in the War of 1812. In 1839, land east of Lyndhurst Road was donated to form what is today's Village of Lyndhurst. The Village grew largely due to its location on route 11 between Cleveland and Akron. Development continued through the late 19th century with a large manufacturing sector taking hold in Lyndhurst during this time period. In 1908, an incorporated village became law when it was passed by Butler County legislators; however, it did not take full form until 1912 when it adopted a name change to Lyndhurst Township. During World War II (1939-1945), much activity took place at local military bases such as Fort Myer and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base which were located nearby within Butler County boundaries; however, little production took place withinLyndhurst itself aside from munitions production which occurred mainly outside of town limits due to prohibitive transportation costs being associated with moving materiel into or out of Lyndhurst during wartime times. After World War II ended and sanctions were put into place against Germany following their war crimes committed during that conflict (such as deportations and annihilation of Jews), many businesses closed down across Ohio due to economic hardships caused by global trade limitations placed on America following that event; accordingly, few resources remained available for development withinLyndshire after 1945 save for scattered housing developments built around major shopping areas such as North Canton and Streetsboro throughout those years before becoming abandoned or used primarily for shorter-term occupancy thereafter (e.g., commercial buildings being torn down to make way for new home construction). However, some residents have still maintained ties to their formerly defunct village while others have moved away over time entirely in search of more modern amenities closer to downtown Cincinnati or other major metropolitan areas across America today where jobs are readily available instead than back home amid difficult economic conditions once again existing today despite efforts made by some residents over recent years official recognition given by both Butler County & Franklin County governments through incorporation status granted pursuant thereto also including special tax privileges & immunity from taxation not currently enjoyed by other villages/townships located therein notwithstanding any contrary intentions aforesaid).
