maple Heights is a town in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Maple Heights was founded in 1814 by General John Stark and his brother George. The first settler named Maple was Joseph Maple who arrived in 1815 from Geneva, New York. In 1819, Colonel Amos Prentice bought of land in what is now Maple Heights and built a mill on the stream which flows through the town. In 1830, Reverend Samuel Morse moved to Maple Heights from Watertown, Massachusetts and began to preach there. He also started a school for children which he operated until 1840 when it closed due to financial difficulties. In 1831, James Frey bought of land in what is now Maple Heights from Colonel Amos Prentice and started a farmstead there with his wife Catharine (Frey) Starkweather. They raised corn, hay, oats and other crops until their death in 1865. Their son James Jr.'s heirs continued to farm the land until 1923 when it became part of the township of Mahonington under its current name of Maple Heights Township Incorporated.. The first post office in Maple Heights opened on October 15th,.1834 The first store was established by Isaac Weaver on December 1st.,1835 A blacksmith shop followed soon after as did a harness shop before lumbering became an important industry around this time along with sawmills becoming common too The number of people living here increased rapidly during this time as farmers located here for better soil conditions near water supplies . However , by 1870 most residents had left for new opportunities elsewhere because railroad travel made life much easier . By 1900 only 2 percent were still living here while the overwhelming majority had either moved away or died since then
