This made Maple Heights quarantined from Richland township proper while Tiffanie township continued to be divided between them with their own courthouse and public square but no schoolhouse or jail until 1824 when both districts were combined forming newly named Tiffanie Township – again including Maple Heights – under new legislation which had been passed just prior to passage of statehood on March 15th that year becoming part of Lucas County soon thereafter along with parts thereof including Defiance and Trigg townships also within Lucas county now forming Cuyahoga County . In 1973, voters passed an ordinance establishing a zoning district specifically for residences within one mile (1 km) of Interstate 71; this allowed development along I-71 within a designated area which included much of what is now Maple Heights Village. This growth continued through the 1980s and 1990s as more people moved into suburbia across Greater Cleveland; however, since 2000 Maple Heights has seen significant decline again due to decreased population density and the impact of new development around I- 71 eastbound Exit 190A. Maple Heights was founded in 1811 by John and Susannah McCrea. The name is derived from the maple tree that lined the street. The McCreas were a landowning family and their farmstead was one of four original villages in Medina County. In 1822, they moved to what is now Maple Heights Township, but continued to live on their farm until their death in 1893. In 1848, Butterfield & Company set up business in Maple Heights and began making telegraph lines out of the township. This was an important development because it allowed for easy communication between Medina County and other parts of Ohio. By 1870, there were more than twenty businesses in Maple Heights with a population of over two hundred people. The first school in Maple Heights was built on Main Street in 1881. It was quickly replaced by a new building that stood until 1959 when it burned down. The current school building was erected on the site of the old school in 1963 and is named after Mrs. Lillie Bicknell, who donated the land for it.
