In 1815, the United States purchased what is now Marion, Ohio from the Shawnee Nation. The town was named after General Anthony Wayne who died in 1794 during the Northwest Indian War. In 1821, when the nation acquired land east of the Allegheny Mountains and south of Indiana, Marion became part of that new territory. The town's first post office opened in 1825.
