The massillon area is home to the oldest continuously operating shotgun range in the United States. The first shotguns were fired here at the Claymore Arsenal onancock Road in 1851. Massillon was also birthplace of Benjamin Butler, one of the most famous American arms dealers and smugglers of his time. Gunshot noise protection has been a concern for Ohioans since at least 1795 when Captain James Cook discovered gunshot noise could cause shipwrecking crews to become lost and stranded ashore. In 1892, Ohio's General Assembly established a state shooting safety board with the mission "to provide legislation safeguarding citizens from hurt or death by firearm accidents." The state Board passed several ordinances regulating firearms including requirement that all handguns possess three rounds of ammunition and that barrels be limited to no more than 26 inches in length. In 1909, Ohio became one of 12 statesda member of the National Rifle Association (NRA). NRA regulations pertaining to firearms changed throughout World War II as gun control laws were revamped following America's participation in conflict. NRA members helped pass sweeping new bans on certain types of firearms after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941; this attack led to increased gun regulation across the country. As America entered into an era of prosperity during the postwar period, NRA membership dwindled as people turned their focus onto more pressing concerns like crime and welfare reform. However, Gun Ownership Day – celebrated annually on November 10th – remains an important national event for NRA members to remember their commitment to Second Amendment rights. After decades of decline in gun ownership rates across Ohio due largely to social trends rather than any government restrictions, Massillon saw its resurgence beginning in the late 1990s as a result of enactment by then-Governor Bob Taft (R) of two landmark piecesof legislation: concealed carry law and universal background check legislation (commonly known as SB 1182). These measures bolsteredgun rights activism throughout Northeast Ohio while increasing public awareness about potential gunshot dangers around town centers and other populated areas frequented by civilians. With both laws now fully implemented,Massillon has seen an increase in law enforcement activity relatedto shootings - most notably gang violence - which underscoresthe importanceof maintaining open accesstotherangeand adjoining areas despite recent city-sponsored efforts toundermine gunfire risks around town centers

Massillon is a town inuyalla County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,582 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Massillon was incorporated in 1836 and became a town in 1871. The first settler in what is now Massillon was John Stephenson, who arrived on July 6, 1795 by horse and wagon from Newark Delaware. He named his new place after Lord Liverpool's district in England where he had been born two years earlier. Stephenson also founded the first gristmill and sawmill hereabouts which were both operated until about 1870 when they were replaced by more modern mills. In 1836, the Village of Massillon was organized as a town within Inuyalla County with a population of just over 100 residents because it felt that its incorporation would help establish better communication between the villages and make it easier for businesses to grow and expand into other areas within Inuyalla County. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Union General Ulysses S Grant ordered all military posts east of Lake Erie to be closed down due to an increase in Confederate troop movements across that border. The order caused much disruption for local farmers who depended on those stores for their goods which included food supplies for their troops fighting on the battlefields near Cincinnati and Toledo. A group of five businessmen-four men and one woman- pooled their money to buy flour from a mill located southwest of Painesville where it had been shipped from Boston (then part of Massachusetts). They transported this flour downriver to Fort Wayne where it was ground into flourmeal before being distributed throughout Union army camps along with other types of ammunition or supplies needed by soldiers on campaign. This effort helped maintain morale among Union troops while they fought against Confederate forces northwest of Columbus at First Battle Of Fallen Timbers on November 11th 1863; an event that has since been called "the turning point" in Ohio history

In 1814, General George Washington visited Massillon and assigned it to be the capital of West Virginia. In 1861, when America seceded from the United States, Massillon became part of the Confederate States of America. After the war, it regained its status as a commercial center and main military base. In 1933, Massillon became one of sixteen communities in Ohio that were merged into Cleveland to form The City of Cleveland. Today, Massillon is home to several museums such as The American Museum of Natural History and The Cleveland Museum of Art.
