When the Ohio River was first discovered by Europeans in the late 17th century, they thought it was a empty canal. They named the river "the Maumee" because an Indian trading post stood on its banks. The post was abandoned in 1808 and no one ever went back to explore it again. In 1815, when General James K. Polk traveled through central Ohio on his way to become president, he stopped at the site of the old trading post and saw that there was still a faint light coming from it. He decided to take some pictures of the place so that he could show them to future presidents. The first optical instrument made in America was invented in Maumee by George Stephenson in 1828. It used mirrors and lenses to make images that could be seen with human eyes only! This device allowed people to see things that were too far away for other people to see!

In 1847, Ohio entrepreneur John F. Martin started the first optical store in what is now Maumee, Ohio. The store was opened on Main Street and served as a commercial center for local businesses and consumers. In 1892, the company relocated to its current location on High Street in downtown Maumee. From there, they became one of the largest optical retailers in the area and continued to grow into the 20th century. In 1956, they merged with another Toledo-based retailer to form Eastern Optical Company. Over time,Eastern Optical Company grew into a major player in optical retailing and remains today one of the most successful companies within this industry.
Maumee is a city located in the state of Ohio, United States. The population was 153,045 as of the 2010 census. As of the 2016 American Community Survey, Maumee had a population of 178,898. It is the county seat for Lucas County. The first European to visit what is now Maumee were French traders and missionaries in 1701 The area that would become Maumee was part of Shawneetown Township on the east side of the Cuyahoga River south of present-day downtown Cleveland. On May 9, 1801, John Quincy Adams signed an act creating Athens Township on the west bank of the Cuyahoga River north of present-day downtown Cleveland. The township was bounded by High Street on the north and east; Clinton Avenue on the south and west; and Park Row on both sides of High Street. On November 8, 1802, a charter was issued to create Maumee Township from portions of Athens Township and Clinton Township. The township contained an area larger than what is now Maumee but smaller than what became Lucas County. It consisted only of parts lying within modern-day Lucas County except for certain areas which formed part of Ottawa County: portion lying along High Street between Clinton Avenue and Park Row (Old Washington Road), including most today's central business district; all land extending from Greenville Pike northwest to present day Delaware Street between Delaware Street and Euclid Avenue; northwestern corner extendi ng from Erie Boulevard southeast to present day West Side Highway (now I-675); eastern corner extending from Erie Boulevard northeast to State Road 3W (now US 25). In 1824 maumaees ratepayers voted not to annex Ottawa County while they debated annexation rates with Portage City & other towns in neighboring counties In 1827 when Ottawa County annexed itself it also annexed much territory formerly belonging to Maumee Township including today's central business district

Maumee is a town in Erie County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,527 at the 2010 census. Maumee was founded by the Maumee Band of Ottawa Indians in 1796 as part of the Northwest Territory and named for Captain John Jacob Astor. It became an incorporated village in 1825. The first permanent settler in Maumee was James Green who arrived in 1798. He built a sawmill on the current site of the city hall and began to grow maize that he traded with other villages along the Great Lakes for goods and passengers on his canoes. In 1807, he built a gristmill near present-day State Street and commercial streets were laid out soon thereafter. In 1840, Green erected a two-story Greek Revival style brick building on what is now Fourth Street which served as his store until 1893 when it burned down. A new store was constructed adjacent to this structure on Third Avenue between State and Second Streets from 1859 to 1863; it burned down again in 1865). In 1830, Nathaniel Pope established a ferry service across the Maumee River from Steubenville to Toledo (then called Canandaigua) which contributed significantly to its growth during this period; by 1850 boatloads of corn had been landed at Steubenville each week bringing settlers from Ohio into Indiana Territory (later Michigan Territory). In 1836, Isaac Aspinwall settled in section 12 north of town on land grant awarded him by General George Armstrong Custer following an Indian Wars engagement nearpresent-day Perrysburg. The Aspinwall family ran one of the largest general stores east of Chicago before moving westward into Illinois Territory where they operated a bakery until their death in 1903. They are buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery northeast of town.. A post office called Maumee was established at present-dayMaumee on November 14, 1837; it continued operation until December 31, 1908.. Captain John Jacob Astor purchased 640 acres (2 km²) north of town center lot number 606 for $1,000 cash from Nathan Pope on July 16th, 1796 as part of Treaty #8 between France/ Britain & America concerning boundary changes after Queen Anne's War.. After years living off hunting moose and other animals brought over with French traders exploring western Canada during La Grande Guerre des Six Nations(the Great War), Captain Jacobs decided that he wanted more than just trading goods back & forth across North America with fur traders - he wanted majority ownership so that he could take care OF HIS OWN PEOPLE! So under Captain Jacobs' guidance & management Miamite band set about organizing themselves into townships...thus beginning ourTownsmen's history here ancestrally speaking! We still process taxes today thru Township Officials e mail because THEY ARE OUR HEROES! When we look back through our township's past we're proud to have helped shape many aspects such as education here today! Today we still enjoy many cultural events including Oktoberfest being held annually downtown since 2007 (& more coming soon!), AmishFaire beingheld every year around October 9th (& more coming soon!), PolishFest happening every year around May 5th(&more coming soon!), various golf tournaments throughout fall etc.,etc...& lots more yet to come!!!
In 1814, the United States of America was formed from a merger of the Northwest Territory and Upper Ohio Territory. The area now known as Maumee was part of the Northwest Territory. In 1815, the United States purchased land in present-day Toledo from the local Native American tribe. The town of Toledo was founded by George Rogers Clark in 1816. Major General John C. Fremont laid out a road from Toledo to Cincinnati in 1817, and construction began on what is now Interstate 675. The first railroads in America were built through central Ohio in the 1830s, and Toledo became an important center for transportation. In 1840, General David Farragut's Union Navy blockaded Memphis and cut off supplies to that city; this forced Memphis to surrender and join Union forces instead. By 1850, Toledo had become one of America's largest cities with over 100,000 residents. It experienced significant economic growth during the late 19th century due to its location at the crossroads of several major railroad routes and its significance as a manufacturing center for items such as leather products, cigars, soapstone carvings, ironworking equipment and textiles
