Maumee, Ohio is a small town located in the northwestern corner of the state of Ohio. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. Other employers include IBM (1907), Ford Motor Company (1914), United States Steel Corporation (1929), Proctor & Gamble (1939) and Owens Corning Glass Company (1968). A number of companies have closed or merged over time; these include American Fertilizer Co., Wachovia National Bank and Trust Company, J C Penney Stores Inc., Bethlehem Steel Corporation and Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.. One reason for this decline is that many jobs have moved to other states or countries over the years; agriculture has been particularly hard hit by this trend. Maumee, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, on the Maumee River. The population was 11,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Toledo metropolitan area and is located about 20 miles (32 km) east of Toledo on I-81. The name "Maumee" comes from an Algonquian word meaning "a meadow." The first permanent settler in present-day Maumee was Nicholas Sibley, who arrived in 1788 and named his settlement after Mount Pleasant in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In 1802 he sold land to John Dickey for $5 per acre. Dickey built a gristmill on the river and began to sell flour to surrounding farmer communities as far away as Muskegon Heights and Detroit. By 1810 there were over 40 mills active along the river in present-day Maumee Township, Lucas County, and Wexford County. In 1870averaged 5 acres (2 ha) of fertile land yielded $50 per year; this increased to 10 acres (4 ha) by 1880 when a water tower was erected downstream at Sandusky Falls that enabled farmers toexport their products directly to markets near Cleveland and Cincinnati without having to go through Memphis or other points along the river route
Maumee was founded in 1795 by John Maumee and his family. The first post office in the town was established in 1801. In 1824, the township of Maumee was organized and it became a part of the newly created Hamilton Township. In 1868, the township of Maumee was divided into two sections - one forMaumee residents and one for Hamilton Township residents. In 1901, both sections were combined to form the current municipality of Maumee.
