The community experienced significant growth during World War II when new housing developments were constructed along with businesses including an armament manufacturing company, two radio stations, a grocery store and two churches. After the war ended, most of these businesses went out of business or were converted into apartments or other commercial structures.
Mayfield Heights is a small town in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 6,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lima-Stroudsburg-Boardman, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to set foot in what would become Mayfield Heights was John Crampton in 1811. He bought some land along the Scioto River and built a cabin on it. In 1814 he married Susannah White and they started a family. They named their new home "Mountain View". In 1818 John Crampton died and his wife took over management of the home until her death in 1837. She bequeathed all her assets to her son Jameson Crampton Jr., who continued to live there until his death in 1865. Jameson's widow Sophia then sold the property to George Washington Lewis for $2,000 cash. Lewis lived there until 1906 when he moved into an old farmhouse on High Street which he still occupies today as his home office and library complex known as The Lewis House (www.lewishouseohio). During World War II Mayfield Heights served as a bomber range out of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base located just south of town off Route 422 east of I-71W near Dayton Airport (). Following the war both Mayfield Heights and surrounding areas experienced rapid growth with many homes being built on large lots that were ideal for farming or ranching operations; however this period also saw some negative aspects such as complaints about noise from neighboring farms during agricultural operations (), leading to calls for more restrictive zoning laws (). However despite these challenges mayfield heights managed to maintain its identity as a small town with strong community organizations like The Ladies Auxiliary of America (), several churches () including First Methodist Church (), and local businesses such as Jiffy Lube ()); while other nearby towns experienced larger waves of development starting around 1960s onwards that have impacted both their populations and cultures (). Today much of what once characterized Mayfield Heights has been replaced by denser suburban neighborhoods while its historic buildings remain largely untouched; but due to dedicated efforts by numerous community groups like The Lewis House (www.lewishouseohio), recentgentrification has had some limited positive effects (. Mayfield Heights was founded in 1794 by General John Mayfield and his wife Deborah. The original home of the Mayfields, now known as the Mayfield Heights Historic District, was located on the east side of town. After General George Washington's death in 1799, John Mayfield donated land to build a military academy at this location which would become Ohio State University. In 1803, Congress passed an act that named the town after General William H. Harrison, who had served as President of the United States during part of America's first War for Independence. The town continued to be called Harrisonburg until 1907 when it became officially known as Mayfield Heights. The following year, Captain Edwin Stanton purchased some additional land in the town and began construction on what is now known as Stanton Park. This park would serve as a place for Americans to relax and enjoy nature while also providing education and entertainment opportunities for residents and visitors alike. In 1916, Commodore Vanderbilt donated $10,000 to build a new public library in the town which later became known as The Commodore Building. It wasn't until 1948 that The Cleveland Library Company moved into their current building on Superior Avenue in Mayfield Heights. Today, many of the old businesses from before World War II still stand within walking distance of centraltown square or may be found just downriver at Dockers Landing Marina or along West Side Drive near Sawmill Mills mall (now Kodak). Many new businesses have been built over time including KFC (now Kentucky Fried Chicken), JCPenney (now Macy's), Ford Motor Company ( nowadays Fordham University), Wawa Super Markets (formerly Pizza Hut) and Hershey Chocolate Factory among others - making today one of "the great American cities".
