Mayfield Heights is a small town in rural Ohio, located about 15 miles north of Cleveland on the Mayfield Heights-Canton mailing list. The population was 7,811 as of the 2010 census. Prior to the arrival of white people in the area in 1814, most of what is now Mayfield Heights was occupied by the Seneca nation. The first European to arrive in what is now Mayfield Heights was George Washington who stopped at the village on his way from Rome to Philadelphia. In 1819, John Duryea and His Party arrived here after spending two months travelling through western Ohio looking for a route to California. After landing here they began construction of their house which still stands today on Main Street across from present day Mayfield High School. The first settler in what is now Mayfield Heights was James Hutton who bought land here from the Seneca nation for $X dollars in 1824. He built a log cabin and named it Huttonstown after himself and his family. Huttontown became an important trading post because it connected with several other villages along this part of State Road 41 that led directly to Cleveland. For many years it served as a stopover point on travel between these close-by settlements and also functioned as a place where local farmers could sell their produce before moving it into larger crates or barrels back down the road to be sold again at more distant points farther away on State Road 41. In 1830, Daniel Boone came through this area while exploring northern Ohio for a newroute to California he knew existed but had yet to be discovered by Europeans due mostly to lack of suitable areas for farming and exploration outside of North America at that time! When he met James Hutton (the previous owner of Huttonstown) he mentioned this supposed route and asked if anyone had any information about it – including maps or drawings! Mr. Boone then took one look at what may have been Ohio’s first township (Huttonstown) and decided this would be an ideal spot for his new enterprise: The United States Exploring Expedition! This group included men such as Captain Cook, Neil Armstrong, Samuel Colt, Edwin Drake ( founder of Drake & Co.), Josiah Bartlett (Journeyman Teacher), David Whitcomb (Whiskey Baron), Jonas Salk (Parkinson’s Disease Founder),and Ulysses S Grant – all experienced explorers who were looking for new routes into Central America via Mexico City! With help from Mr. Boone’s son-in-law John Fetterman (& later Congressman John Lewis) they began construction on July 1st 1830 near where Main Street & US 40 meet today – less than three weeks after they reached civilization! What followed next can only be described as magic because none of them had ever seen anything like it before! They began digging until they hit something solid – human bones dating back over 2 centuries!!! It wasn’t until 1850 when scientists finally found out how these bones got there; someone buried them HERE!! Mayfield Heights, Ohio is a city in Sandusky County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. It is the second largest city in Sandusky County and the fifth-largest city in Summit County after OH City of Dayton, Akron, Euclid, and Canton. The first settler in Mayfield Heights was Joseph Ladd who arrived on July 4th, 1813. He and his family were among the first to set foot on what would become Sandusky County. The town was founded by George Washington Carver who purchased 3/8 mile (1 km) of land from Isaac Hinton on December 9th, 1826. In 1851 John Prentice built a sawmill on the west side of town. In 1865 David Wills bought the mill and it continued to be run until it closed its doors in 1924. Wills also operated an ice cream parlor which remain open today as part of Carver's Candy Company located at 12 N First Street until 1984 when it closed because of a chemical reaction with stored gasoline which caused environmental damage to nearby homes. This event helped spark off greater development around town with businesses starting up such as General Motors plant (now known as Babcock & Wilcox) on Elm Street; J&J Cigars store at 116 N Second Street; hardware store at 149 S Fourth Street; post office at 143 S Fourth Street; restaurant - now called Joe's Pizza - at 231 S Third Avenue; car dealership - now known as Ford Motor Co.'s Highland Park Assembly Plant - at 251 E Harrison Road; and Department Store moved from its original location across Main Street to 103rd Place near Windermere Drive in 1985 before closing down 25 years later due to lack of business enthusiasm or other factors like increased competition from more popular stores within minutes walking distance of Mayfield Heights' downtown core). On September 10th 1923 Carl Fetterman opened his general store which became one of the most successful small businesses in town during that time period selling items like cigarettes and candy canes pre-packaged for easy purchase by residents or customers outside their doorsteps without having to go into downtown where prices were often prohibitively high or being forced out of business by overly aggressive competitors who catered only to tourist dollars instead of providing quality merchandise for everyday consumers like themselves. This general store is currently preserved within Historic district boundaries along with other buildings surrounding it including: Fetterman's Garage (closed down 2006 but still standing just adjacent to current day I-271 exit 285 eastbound), Mrs Fetterman's House (which burned down March 28th 1976 but is still standing adjacent to I-271 exit 287 southbound), Carl's House ( demolished 1978 but still standing next door), Mr Fetterman's Truck Stop (demolished 2005 but still standing next door across I-271 exit 287 southbound from Mrs Fethermans house), Gertrude Dockless' House(destroyed 1978 but still standing adjacentto I-271exit287southboundfromMrsFethermanshouse)) . TheMayfield Heights area was first settled in the early 1800s. The first post office was established in 1814 and the first school was started in 1819. The community developed around a small sawmill, which operated until it burned down in 1868. The community began to grow after it became connected to the Toledo, Ohio Union Railroad. In 1916, Mayfield Heights incorporated as a village and had its own police department. In 1951, the village merged with neighboring Mayfield Township to form Mayfield Heights-MayFIELD Township Municipal District.
