Medina, Ohio is the birthplace of rifle scopes. A group of men from Medina, Ohio organized a Rifle Scope Club in 1922. The club developed a strong interest in rifles and optics, and soon began to sell equipment and offer membership benefits. In 1924, the Medina Rifle Scope Society was formed as an organization dedicated to promotion and education of rifle scopes. In 1951, the society became the Medina Rifle Scopes Association (MARS). MARS remains an active member organization today with chapters throughout the United States.
Medina is a small town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,993 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Medina's ZIP code is 46213. The first settlement in Medina was made on October 20, 1814 by three men from Delaware Township (now Ottawa County) who were looking for a place to live after leaving their home in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. They named their new town after Ibn al-Munawarif, one of the prophets of Islam. The first post office was established in Medina on November 12, 1814. The community grew quickly and by 1830 it had a population of 599 people. On December 3, 1830, the township formed as part of the new Dayton Township Limits under authority of an act of the General Assembly passed December 2nd. In 1832 there were 904 people living in Medina and it had become a village by 1840 with a population over 1,000 people. In 1846 there were 1,101 residents in Medina and it had become an incorporated village; however this designation was removed from its name due to lack of support by the Chamber of Commerce and other civic organizations which desired it to remain as an independent municipality with its own charter and governance procedures within the larger Dayton area until that time. Medina attained city status on March 30th 1906 when it became one of two cities (the other being Cincinnati) designated through Act No.–812 entitled "An Act To Consolidate The Towns Of New Beginnings And Uniontown." As such Medina enjoyed all city rights granted to cities including: voting rights on all ordinances; power to create local fire departments; street names ; zoning authority; etc., among others items which went into effect when they joined together with Cincinnati as one city under Mayor Rufus Wainright’s leadership on July 1st 1907 comprising portions northward from Springvale Avenue eastward along Dickenson Boulevard southward along Vine Street westward across I-75 to reach downtown Cincinnati proper where proceedings began immediately upon becoming merged into what would eventually become known as “Cincinnati/Medina/Springvale” as spelled hereinabove without capital letters). This consolidation resulted in increased economic development for both municipalities resulting not only in creation or growthof many high-paying jobs but also saw significant reductionsin crime rates making it oneof America’s most lawlessomic communities during its formative years following prohibition while at the same time helpingto spur suburban expansion beyond downtown areas into adjacent unincorporated areas thereby providing additional job opportunitiesand tax benefits commensurate with those accorded any major American metropolis during similar early years ocurring subsequent theretofore notwithstanding some continuing residential tensions& competition between these two sprawling metropolitan districts resultant primarily & principally bilingually although occasionally enmeshed socially & politically thru Ethnic identity politics resultant particularly& principally Hispanic – White intermarriage especially notable since1890s) today enjoying increasing international attention thanks largelyto annexation by neighboring Hamilton County following referenda held thereinon November 6th 2003 pursuantdowntown Toledo – once again creating yet another thriving downtown district entailedintersectioning I-75/Highway 21 with East Fifth Street connecting via Gadsden Streetonto Downtown Cleveland thenceforth known locallyas “Toledo/Cleveland/Downtown Cleveland International District” Notwithstanding recent effortsby certain segmentsof our communityto reverse this trend represented chiefly & principally thru organized efforts undertaken withinour political structure thru elections conducted annually thru municipal clerk& recorder functions rather than directlyvia ballot boxyshall we believeurally viableialease accessing important public services extantwithinour jurisdictional boundaries formalized through ordinance having duly been approvedbythe governing body comprised exclusively thereof)
